WARNING: This video will upset many people here, so you may want to skip it. Hasan Piker ruffled a lot of feathers when he said he would vote third-party in a Newsom/Vance match-up. In this video, Jennifer Welch does a good job of capturing where that thinking comes from and why the Democratic party ignores this at its own peril, and why we keep losing elections to awful people who have no business anywhere near leadership, despite our having objectively better candidates. There's a case to be made that mere 'harm-reduction' voting still enables fascism but just at a slower pace, so it's not sufficiently different to motivate many voters we need in our coalition. So the next question involves what we should do to capture this demographic that could be large enough to propel us to victory or leave us in our current state of defeat at the hands less-qualified, awful people.
I'm not saying Piker is right or that I would do the same, but we need to think about ways to engage a growing segment of the potential voting population. "We aren't Republicans" may be helpful at this moment, as we see from recent special elections, but it won't be enough to keep a majority in the longer term, as reflected in our current dismal voter approval ratings. Those ratings are what we must turn around somehow if we want to create a sustainable bulwark against that small but very vocal portion of the US population that eagerly embraces fascism in order to be rid of us.
We are stuck with the voting population we have, so we need to learn to navigate better in that environment. BTW, this means actually seriously looking at the autopsy of why we lost rather than ignoring it as our current leadership decided for whatever reason. IMO this was a terrible decision that will damage us further.

(3,171 posts)I'm an old man. I've seen the best and the worst in Washington politics. I've seen the best and worst inhabit the presidency. I agree with Michael More's comment that Bill Clinton was, in effect, a Republican president, I felt that Barrack Obama did much less for the workers in this Country and a ton more for the elite, bailing out banks and corporations while millions of American families lost their homes through foreclosure, for example.
But I know very well what Trump and his ugly, soulless minions have done to this country and its people, and its core principles. I know that Trump and his minions have ignored the law, ignored the Constitution, the basic human rights of both immigrants and citizens. I know Trump has done that while filling his pockets with literally billions of dollars, gifts from the biggest and ugliest segments of corporate society, of the world.
And I know that 2 good, decent American citizens were murdered by Trump in full view of the American people, murdered in a city occupied by absolutely the worst of the worst of us, ICE, armed and masked, beating, gassing, and disappearing people in plain view. America, my America, was revolted, horrified, and disgusted by Trump's Federal Government perpetrated on Minneapolis.
It is clear to me, a certainty to me, Vance is so far up Trump's butt that there is no way he would institute reforms to restore the moral and legal order in America. He'll carry the banner of murderous, racist fascism forward.
If Hasan and his folks think that Gavin Newsom is "the same" they are welcome to their sick and foolish opinion.
I, for one, would vote for Shapiro, for Pritzker, for Swalwell, for Newsome, for any, any, any of the contenders for the Democratic primary. If me and mine are in the minority in the Democratic Party, we will at least go down fighting. Hasan would simply pretend the problem posed by virulent fascism does not exist. or is not serious. That is wrong, dead wrong, ugly wrong. But, hey, to each his own.
But please remember, Hasan and those who are persuaded by him to vote third party: third party votes and non-votes gave Trump the Supreme Court and the bully pulpit to get the moral, racist, dregs of American society to rise up in joy at the atrocities committed by a pedophile and pedophile supporter against the people and foundations of American democracy.
So, Hasan, have a good life. Mine is almost over and I now feel like I'm leaving just before the fire this sick, morally demented fat man has started engulfs everything worthwhile in this Country.
