Let's talk about GOP doubts about Trump.... - Belle of the Ranch

Well, howdy there Internet people. It's Belle again. So, today we're going to talk about GOP doubts about Trump.

The Republican party has been on a pretty steady losing streak ever since Trump won reelection and started trying to enact his agenda. They lost dozens of races and special elections that were in areas that favored them, sometimes heavily. The tariffs, the one big beautiful for billionaires package, Trump trying to stop the release of the Epstein files, the disaster at DHS, the government shutdowns, gerrymanders that turn into dummymanders, the layoffs, the inflation, now gas prices and the war.

Trump has jumped from one wildly unpopular position to the next and has led the Republican party to failure after failure. And yet GOP politicians, particularly those in the House, continue to follow his lead, even going as far as to go on record with a vote supporting some of his most unpopular positions.

Well, Republicans got another reason to doubt Trump's infallible leadership this week when another deep red Republican seat flipped to the Democratic Party in a special election, Florida's state house district 87. This time, Democrat Emily Gregory defeated Republican Jon Maples, a former council member who received Trump's complete and total endorsement back in January. Trump won the district by 11 points during the 2024 presidential election.

Trump voted in the election via mail. Yes, Trump uses mail-in voting while tying TSA funding to the SAVE Act to stop you from doing it. In case you're missing the subtext, the district in question is one that contains Mar-a Lago. Mar-a Lago is now in a blue district.

Heather Williams, the president of the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, said, "Mar-a Lago just flipped red to blue, which should have Republicans sweating the midterms. A Trump plus 11 district in his own backyard, shouldn't be in play for Democrats. But tonight proves Republicans are vulnerable everywhere.”

That very well may be the lesson Republicans take away from this. While realistically this loss doesn't mean any more than the long string of losses Trump has already led them to, this one is symbolic because it's his backyard. If Trump's shrinking coattails are too small to ride right outside the gates of his club, what good will they be elsewhere?

Trump's electoral failures, combined with large portions of the Senate already treating him like a lame duck, may start to shape dynamics more and more moving forward. The flip side of this is that Democrats are incredibly energized because of it. Again, this seat doesn't mean any more or less than the other wins they've seen, but it matters symbolically because it means Trumpian politics is losing.

Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried said, "Democrats can run and win anywhere, including Donald Trump's backyard."

Anyway, it's just a thought. Y'all have a good day.
