2. Guys snatched into the military when they think they've got better things to do

generally make rotten soldiers in peacetime. And no, they don't remember their training well enough or keep in good enough shape to be any use without going through basic training again if we're at war.

And no, I don't see anyone in Gen Z following that fat slob anywhere to do much of anything.

One of the best things this country did was get rid of the peacetime draft. Imagine if Bush/Cheney had access to everytbody in this country between 18 and 28. They wouldn't have stopped with their two unwinnable wars. There would have been more.

3. Well said. And I'm old enough to remember the panic and desperation of the times when the draft was mandatory

I wasn't old enough to be involved, but I knew a few people who were - and we've seen the experiences of those who were affected by those desperate times right here on DU. And the speaker makes an excellent point, a "draft dodger" who avoided conscription with a made up excuse and has repeatedly insulted and belittled our brave miliary now wants another generation to face what he couldn't just for his own ends. And you're right, like Putin, if he had control over the lives of an entire generation, it's an excuse for another unwinnable war. And we know that he dreams of a parade in his honor comprised of tanks and weapons and lives that are all at his disposal - like Putin. '

4. Trump aside (yuck). I've always believed that

a mandatory two years of service to the country with programs similar to AmeriCore, would be beneficial to young Americans and the country. The reward could be something on the line of free college tuition for the first two years or very low home mortgage rates.

Just in case you're wondering, I'm a woman and I did several years of volunteer work at mental health social centers and domestic violence abuse prevention groups.
