Trump's big announcement ends in disaster - Another Day - Brian Tyler Cohen

Transcript:

donald Trump can't refuse a fight or a
bribe this is just another
day this morning Donald Trump finally
did what past presidents were too afraid
to do he took on big pharma and their
skyrocketing drug prices and he began
this major announcement the same way he
always does with a quick daily
affirmation
thank you very much thank you everybody
it's a big
day should be fun i don't know you'll
maybe find reasons why it's not that's
his opener why bother with passive
aggressive platitudes just walk to the
podium blasting double guns and get it
over with but once Trump was done
reciting the pledge of displeasure he
hit big pharma where it hurts i think
the healthcare companies should make uh
pretty much the same money i really
don't believe they're going they should
be affected very much because basically
what we're doing is equalizing there's a
new word that I came up with which I
think is probably the best word we're
going to equalize we're all going to pay
the same we're going to pay what
Europe's going to pay equalizing i guess
we know what someone was watching last
night equalizing is not a new word or
the best word but it is a word that
Donald Trump is using to articulate this
administration's non-plan to tackle the
cost of drugs in America trump signed an
executive order asking the drug
companies to voluntarily drop their
prices so that US will pay what the
other countries in the world pay and the
reason he's asking and not telling is
because those companies are good people
and I'm not knocking the drug companies
i'm really more knocking the countries
than the drug companies because uh
they're forced to to do things you see
it's not the drug companies these other
countries are forced to do what they do
whereas our country is lobbyed to do it
very different trump is blaming other
countries for cheap drugs but they've
got singlepayer systems where the
government negotiates lower drug prices
for their entire country and their
citizens that's why their prices are low
that's not a liability it's an asset
like Owen Wilson and his nose we could
have low drug prices too but Donald
Trump and all Republicans and in
fairness many Democrats don't want that
system and so instead they blame foreign
countries as if they're doing something
wrong when the only country not serving
its citizens is ours and the guy in
charge of our country is Trump frankly
until and unless we put a singlepayer
system in place we will always get
over by big pharma because if
there's no single payer negotiating down
prices then guess what prices will stay
high so Trump will sign these executive
orders as if there's some magic bullet
but if bringing down drug prices via one
guy's signature on a sheet of paper had
any legal force behind it don't you
think other Democratic presidents would
have tried it this is the usual Trump
bluster and he has to be on a healthy
dose of all the drugs to think it was
ever going to work this executive order
is just another example of talking tough
and claiming victory when nothing's
actually happened that'd be like raising
the flag at Eoima to celebrate the fact
that they bought a flag the reality is
that Trump has no legal authority to
make other countries comply and his own
party which controls both houses of
Congress just put forth a bunch of
healthc care policy changes and totally
absent was any attempt to limit the cost
of drugs and on top of that after
Trump's blustery presser Merc and Fizer
stocks went up now admittedly I'm no
expert on the stock market but when
you've wrestled big pharma into
submission the response is generally not
a boom in their stock price but he
continued "Now I think by the way
pharmaceutical I have great respect for
these companies and for the people that
run them i really do and I think they
did one of the greatest jobs in history
for their company convincing people for
many years that this was a fair system
game recognizing game not only is he not
throwing shade at the pharmaceutical
companies he's giving them a round of
applause because for Trump whether or
not people should be ripped off is
beside the point if you can more power
to you and this is Trump's worldview a
view that was further illustrated when
he was asked about the plane that was
recently offered by the Qatari
government mr president what do you say
to people who view that luxury jet as a
personal gift to you why not leave it
behind you're ABC fake news right only
only ABC well a few of you would let me
tell you you should be embarrassed
asking that question uh they're giving
us a free jet i could say "No no no
don't give us I want to pay you a
billion or 400 million or whatever it
is." Or I could say "Thank you very
much." The only thing that costs more
than this free plane is Trump's
gaslighting bill the government of Qatar
offered Trump a $400 million luxury
Boeing 747 that he could use as Air
Force One while Boeing makes him a new
one you know like how when your sedan is
in the shop instead of getting a loaner
from the dealership a foreign government
will often step in and give you a
Bugatti just to be nice no strings
attached nobody knows what Qara is going
to want in return for this plane present
which is the whole point would you
accept a phone that the Chinese
government gave you or a car that the
Russians gave you on some of these
things it's like too easy to You're just
arguing it's bugged maybe well either
bugged or they could have a kill switch
that takes it down at some point whoa
now a kill switch i mean come on that's
a It's a tad alarmist don't you think i
mean there's no reason to believe that
anything bad could happen with a plane
in the Middle East well uh okay that's
another reason not to take the bribe
trump gets offered a shiny thing and
doesn't even care what he or this
country might be on the hook for the
corruption is what gets him going never
mind the fact that we have this little
thing in the constitution called the
imalments clause which says that gifts
from foreign governments like oh I don't
know luxury airliners are a no no this
is almost exactly the sort of gift that
our founders had in mind uh that
Americans shouldn't accept chris Coons
is right although maybe not exactly what
the founders had in mind founders
couldn't wrap their heads around a
non-disentary related death pretty sure
conceiving of a Boeing 747 Palace in the
sky back in the year uh
1787 would have been a stretch
regardless Trump thinks that a deal like
this is simply a no-brainer i could be a
stupid person and say "Oh no we don't
want a free plane we give free things
we'll take one too." Wait who is stupid
here this gift is a Trojan horse and
Trump is the only guy who still thinks
that a Trojan horse is a reference to
just a really big awesome horse and just
from an optics perspective I hate to be
the guy that critiques the president's
messaging here but maybe when your
transportation secretary has been going
around all weekend saying how terrible
air travel is about to be for Americans
this summer you might want to pump the
brakes on the whole only a fool would
turn down a private jet talk trump
claims that this plane isn't going to
him directly but will actually be a gift
to our defense department which until I
see the card I ain't buying i mean let's
be clear this will be Trump's plane and
when he leaves office and when he leaves
office ownership of the aircraft will be
transferred to the Trump presidential
library i pray that happens i mean I
don't believe for a second that Trump is
actually going to part ways with a plane
that's been nicknamed a palace in the
sky but if by some chance he does I
can't think of a better illustration for
this man's hypocrisy than having a $400
million gift inside the presidential
library of a guy whose most notable move
is telling girls they need to ration
their dolls and still Trump remained
defiant you know there was an old golfer
named Samne did you ever hear he won 82
tournaments he was a great golfer and he
had a motto when they give you a putt
you say "Thank you very much." You pick
up your ball and you walk to the next
hole a lot of people are stupid they say
"No no I insist on putting it." Then
they putt it and they miss it and their
partner gets angry at them you know what
remember that Samne when they give you a
putt you pick it up and you walk to the
next hole and you say "Thank you very
much." My god it really is hard to bust
a guy for cheating when he consistently
admits to it on camera but here's the
thing it's still cheating the pit boss
in Vegas doesn't let you off the hook
cuz you showed him where you hid your
ace there are reasons that we have laws
that prevent our elected officials from
cheating the system and accepting free
putts from other countries that may not
put America's interests at the top of
their list you know reasons like
national and economic security and no
matter how badly Trump wants it to be
the rules of the presidency are slightly
different than the rules on a golf
course i know that might be a little
hard for him to wrap his head around
considering he's surrounded by rich
white people who support him no matter
how deep of a trap he's in but I guess
he'd have to be a stupid person to
realize that
