re: NAACP calls for boycott of anti-DEI states' colleges

A post from earlier today: (https://www.democraticunderground.com/10143207349) stated that "The head of the NAACP is calling on Black student-athletes to reconsider their decisions to attend public colleges and universities in Florida, challenging a new state policy that bars those institutions from using government funds on diversity, equity and inclusion programs."
Here is a letter to the editor I wrote several months ago about the subject:
>>>Race in sports had a major impact on civil rights in the Deep South in the 1970s. All white Kentucky lost the basketball national championship in 1966 to Texas Southwest (now UTEP) with 5 black starters. In 1970, a time when Alabama and other Southern schools could not enroll black students, Bear Bryant's all white Alabama team lost badly to a Southern Cal team led by a black running back. Knowing that SEC sports would no longer be competitive without black players led to a grudging acceptance of desegregation.
The current culture war being waged against discussion of race and past atrocities against African Americans, along with an increasing pushback against the LGBTQ community, may begin to hit home with the average voter when red state schools start losing premier athletes due to their regressive politics.
Let's see how Texas or Florida MAGAs react when the next great QB or 7 foot tall Center announces that he is retracting his long held intention to play at one of their schools, and is going instead to Michigan or UCLA because of the policies being enacted by Abbott and DeSantis and their proto-fascist legislatures.

Great bumper sticker

On the back of a nice looking Volvo SUV:

RFK Jr (then, in slightly smaller letters under that): If MAGA just isn’t crazy enough for you

Instructions to the young folks

I read last night that Willie Nelson said it was time for young people to get politically active, and start thinking about the kind of world they would be leaving for him and Keith Richards.

I think Trump deserves three terms

One in Federal prison, one in New York State prison, and one in Georgia State prison.

Simplest gun policy

Guns should have the same restrictions as cars.
Owners must be of age, have had training, and passed testing to get a license.
Then, registration and insurance are required. Any major violation or enough minor violations and you can lose your right to own a gun for a period of time (similar to speeding tickets) or go to jail (similar to DUI).
Failure to follow these rules would result in fines, jail and/or confiscation of the gun.

The NRA will argue that guns are a right, not a privilege; sane people will argue that not being murdered is also a right and there is no undue burden to treating guns like cars.

Columbia, SC newspaper dropping racist cartoonist

I wrote the local paper when the news broke about Scott Adams full-throated racist attack. I wasn't sure what response I would get, but this was waiting in my inbox this morning:

>>>Dear subscriber,
Thank you for contacting The State.
The State is dropping the “Dilbert” comic strip from our pages after recent comments by its creator, Scott Adams. Mr. Adams is free to share his views as he sees fit, but we will not allow our platform to be used by those who espouse hatred and bigotry. Our readers deserve better. We all deserve better.

Abbott's statement to Biden

Stupendously stupid comment.
After he gave Biden a “letter” with solutions to the border situation, he blasted Biden for waiting so long to visit there.
His statement was, and this is a near quote, that Biden should have come to the border on “day one” to work on the problem that “he had created.”

I guess POTUS does have superhuman powers if he could create all those problems in just the first few hours after his inauguration.

This has been an example of democracy?

Dear GOP friends:
The vote by the starving survivors in a lifeboat of who will be eaten is also an example of democracy, but it is neither a process to be proud of, nor an appealing sight to observe.

A very good year?

I just realized that 2022 could mark the end of Trump, Alex Jones and Elon Musk.
That’s what I call a great year.

Boycotts don't work unless they know it

This is in reference to Twitter, and the NAACP and other groups calling for a boycott of advertisers.
If companies are supposed to wait until they see a small drop in sales and assume that it may be related to their Twitter ads, the boycott won’t be effective.
Instead, keep a template to cut and paste for companies you see on there and send an email to their PR or Marketing department. A suggestion:

“My spouse and I are planning to buy new (xxx) this month. We are honoring the general boycott of Twitter advertisers until the site establishes sensible content moderation and won’t be considering (your company). If you decide to withdraw your Twitter ads, please let me know so I can consider your product again.”
