A very revealing Donald Trump quote about why he ran for president

Ask most politicians why they run for president and you are likely to get an answer that sounds something like, “I wanted to do the most good for the most people as possible,” or something similar.

Maggie Haberman for her forthcoming book, “Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America,” revealed the “why” behind his past and (likely) future bids for the nation’s highest office.

“The question I get asked more than any other question: ‘If you had it to do again, would you have done it?’” Trump told Haberman. “The answer is, yeah, I think so. Because here’s the way I look at it. I have so many rich friends and nobody knows who they are.”

OK. So, just to be crystal clear here – Trump is saying that if he had it to do all over, he would run for president again because it made him more famous. That the key motivation for him to run for president was to be well-known – and it worked. /SNIP

U.S. warns of catastrophic consequences if Russia uses nuclear weapons in Ukraine

United States warned on Sunday of "catastrophic consequences" if Moscow were to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, after Russia's foreign minister said regions holding widely-criticized referendums would get full protection if annexed by Moscow.

Votes in four eastern Ukrainian regions, aimed at annexing territory Russia has taken by force, were staged for a third day on Sunday. The Russian parliament could move to formalize the annexation within days.

By incorporating the areas of Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia into Russia, Moscow could portray efforts to retake them as attacks on Russia itself, a warning to Kyiv and its Western allies.

U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said on Sunday the United States would respond to any Russian use of nuclear weapons against Ukraine and that it had spelled out to Moscow the "catastrophic consequences" it would face.

"I don't think he's bluffing": Zelenskyy says Putin's nuclear threats "could be a reality"

Source: CBS

Washington — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday that he does not believe Russian President Vladimir Putin is bluffing with his threats to use nuclear weapons, and urged Ukraine's allies to continue putting pressure on Putin to deter him.

"Maybe yesterday it was a bluff. Now, it could be a reality," Zelenskyy said in an interview with "Face the Nation." "He wants to scare the whole world. These are the first steps of his nuclear blackmail. I don't think he's bluffing. I think the world is deterring it and containing this threat. We need to keep putting pressure on him and not allow him to continue."

Putin last week threatened to use nuclear weapons as he announced a partial mobilization of his military reserves, prompting Russian men of fighting age to flee the country to avoid fighting in Ukraine. The call-up by Putin of his military reserves came just before people in Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine began voting on whether to become part of Russia, a process that has been denounced by the West.

President Biden said Friday the referendums are a "sham" and "false pretext to try to annex parts of Ukraine," while Zelenskyy warned an annexation would make it "impossible" for diplomatic negotiations with Putin to continue.

'It is surreal': Canada's Atlantic coast residents describe devastation as Fiona wipes away homes and knocks out power

(CNN)Fiona ripped through Canada's eastern seaboard at hurricane strength after making landfall in Nova Scotia on Saturday, slamming the area with fierce winds and storm surge, sapping power for hundreds of thousands and washing away or collapsing some coastal homes.

Fiona, now a post-tropical cyclone, continued to slowly weaken Saturday evening and into the night as it moved away from the coastal town of Channel-Port aux Basques, in Newfoundland and Labrador, where the storm left a trail of devastation. Some coastal homes in the area collapsed and a few toppled structures fell into the sea or were surrounded by floodwater, pictures sent from the province Saturday morning showed.
In Channel-Port aux Basques, houses were washed away, Mayor Brian Button said in a Facebook video Saturday. Huge waves reaching the eastern shores of Nova Scotia and southwestern Newfoundland caused "severe coastal flooding" at the town, the Canadian Hurricane Centre said Saturday night.

Authorities in the province declared a state of emergency for the town amid "multiple electrical fires, residential flooding and washouts" Saturday morning.

René Roy, editor-in-chief of Wreckhouse Press, a local news publication, described a scene of carnage in the storm: uprooted trees, at least eight nearby homes vanished in the wake of a violent storm surge, cabins floating by, a boat carried by floodwaters into the middle of a local playground. /snip

Investors pull almost $140 million from the company planning to merge with Donald Trump's Truth Soci

Source: Insider

Investors are walking away from commitments to invest in a company that planned to merge with Donald Trump's Truth Social platform.

"Blank-check" company Digital World Acquisition said in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing on Friday that some backers were pulling a total of $139 million they had planned to put into the deal. Digital World had previously announced funding commitments of $1 billion.

The investors who signed up for the deal about a year ago were able to back out if it was not completed by September 20.

The investors who walked away were not disclosed in the filings, but Reuters reported that Sabby Management, which planned to put in $100 million, is one that had bowed out. /snip

Just in case you missed this:

Trump’s embrace of QAnon raising concerns about future political violence

Former President Trump appears to be embracing the unfounded theories of the extremely far-right QAnon community and it's raising concerns about future political violence. Mike Rothschild, author of "The Storm Is Upon Us: How QAnon Became a Movement, Cult, and Conspiracy Theory of Everything," joined Amna Nawaz to discuss.

There's been a lot of headlines, a lot of attention to pay to some of these elements. There's a song, in particular, that seems to be associated with people who follow QAnon. And Trump actually has used it in a video.

It has also been played at rallies, like this one last weekend in Ohio. Just take a quick lesson.

Donald Trump, Former President of the United States: We are a nation that has weaponized its law enforcement against the opposing political party like never, ever before. We have got a Federal Bureau of Investigation that won't allow bad election-changing facts to be presented to the public.

When you look like this you shouldn't be surprised with a heavy sentence.

(CNN)Timothy Hale-Cusanelli, an ex-Army reservist and US Capitol rioter who said January 6, 2021, was "exhilarating" and felt like "civil war" was sentenced on Thursday to four years behind bars.

"This is a significant sentence," District Judge Trevor McFadden said.

McFadden lambasted Hale-Cusanelli for his "sexist, racist and antisemitic comments" that the judge said motivated, in part, his actions that day.

Hale-Cusanelli, who was convicted in May of all five charges he faced, including the felony of obstructing an official proceeding, told the judge he "would never see my face again."

OH DEAR GOD! Space Force song.

George Takai said it sounds like Weird Al tried to write a Star Trek theme. I can't help but visualize Starship Troopers when this plays. I honestly had to laugh.
