22% of Florida's counties are showing ZERO cases of COVID-19...hmm.....

67 total counties
15 counties which each show ZERO cases, per https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/96dd742462124fa0b38ddedb9b25e429

That's 22.3% (rounded down to 22)

Truly no infections, or, more likely, lack of testing ? Funny they are all red counties, except for Jefferson which I think goes blue along with Leon County (Tallahassee). eta: Gadsden is blue also.

Florida Is Facing a Coronavirus Catastrophe

https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2020/03/ron-desantis-coronavirus-florida-new-york-trump.html

Following Trump’s lead, Gov. Ron DeSantis refused to shut down the state. Now he’s scapegoating New Yorkers for surging infections.

So why is DeSantis refusing to compel all Floridians to stay home? From the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, DeSantis has adopted whatever policies seem to mollify Donald Trump. That is no surprise. During the 2018 Florida gubernatorial primary, Trump endorsed DeSantis, effectively clinching the nomination for the previously obscure congressman. In return, Trump expects DeSantis to ensure that he’ll win Florida in the 2020 presidential election. But the governor has reportedly done little to help Trump, neglecting the state’s Republican infrastructure necessary to churn out GOP voters while paying insufficient fealty to the president. On March 5, Politico reported that the “bad blood” between the two men might soon spill out into the open.

It has not—probably because in the intervening weeks, DeSantis has adopted Trump’s disastrously negligent, hands-off approach to the virus.

Trump has richly rewarded DeSantis for toeing the White House’s line. The president showered DeSantis with praise at a Saturday press briefing, declaring: “He’s a very talented guy. He’s a very good governor. Everyone loves him. He’s doing a fantastic job for Florida.” The federal government has also given Florida adequate medical supplies from the national stockpile while denying them to states with Democratic governors. According to the Washington Post, for instance, Maine asked for a half-million N95 masks and received about 5 percent of what it requested. Florida, by contrast, requested 430,000 surgical masks, 180,000 N95 respirators, 82,000 face shields, and 238,000 gloves—and received it all within three days.

And yet, despite doing everything Trump could ask for, DeSantis has failed miserably to contain COVID-19. The state still isn’t testing nearly enough people, allowing the virus to spread silently while county officials implement public health measures that Desantis rejects. In the Miami region, infections may soon reach New York City levels, straining hospital capacity and forcing doctors to ration scarce equipment like ventilators. DeSantis has responded to this emerging catastrophe by looking the other way and continually targeting New Yorkers. In addition to the interstate checkpoints, the governor has stationed members of the National Guard at Florida’s airports, where troops screen travelers from the New York region and direct them to self-quarantine for two weeks. “After all the hard work,” DeSantis explained, “we don’t want it to now get seeded as people flee the hot zone.” His spokeswoman decried New Yorkers visiting Florida, accusing them of carrying the virus into Florida, “unwittingly or not.”

Randy Fine, a Republican state representative and DeSantis ally, was even more explicit in maligning New Yorkers. “Seems like some of our friends from New York are trying very hard to make us like New York,” Fine said on Monday. “We don’t know how many people those criminals spread the virus to here.”

Trump suggests US should treat Germany as an enemy because of World War II

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/trump-germany-coronavirus-ww2-enemy-allies-russia-putin-a9435906.html

Donald Trump is suggesting the United States should treat Germany more like an enemy because the two countries were adversaries in World War II as the president again lobbied for closer US-Russian relations.

If he turns the off-the-cuff remark into US policy, Mr Trump would try fundamentally overhauling the post-World War II global power dynamic that saw Western countries bring Germany into their sphere while combating Moscow and fighting the spread of communism in the post-war era. But with little opposition to the American-German alliance in Congress, especially the GOP-run Senate, such a plan would face ample pushback – including from within his own party.

Mr Trump, during another wildly cascading "Fox & Friends" call-in, launched into a remarkable diatribe about Germany and Russia – and how the United States should treat each country – after being asked about what he and Russian President Vladimir Putin would discuss during a planned telephone conversation Monday morning.

The American leader repeated his long-espoused view that it would be a "good thing" if Washington and Moscow had a warmer relationship, noting he has been saying so since he was first a presidential candidate. Despite his five-year-old contention, the Cold War adversaries remain rivals on the global stage.

Ok he's gone totally insane now and oh yes, PUTIN!!!

Gov. Ron DeSantis doesn’t want infected ‘foreigners’ to be ‘dumped’ in Florida and ‘using up resources’

https://www.rawstory.com/2020/03/gov-ron-desantis-doesnt-want-infected-foreigners-to-be-dumped-in-florida-and-using-up-resources/

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) complained on Monday that people aboard a cruise ship where four have died could be “dumped” in Florida.

During an appearance on Fox News, DeSantis was asked about the Zaandam cruise ship. According to reports, 73 passengers on the ship have flu-like symptoms. At least two have tested positive for COVID-19.

“And not only that, I think a lot of these are foreigners,” DeSantis told Fox News. “We cannot afford to have people who aren’t even Floridians dumped into south Florida using up those valuable resources.”

“We view this as a big, big problem,” he added. “And we do not want to see people dumped in southern Florida.”

NYT: Nurses Die, Doctors Fall Sick and Panic Rises on Virus Front Lines

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/30/nyregion/ny-coronavirus-doctors-sick.html

The pandemic has begun to sweep through New York City’s medical ranks, and anxiety is growing among normally dispassionate medical professionals.

A supervisor urged surgeons at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in Manhattan to volunteer for the front lines because half the intensive-care staff had already been sickened by coronavirus.

“ICU is EXPLODING,” she wrote in an email.

A doctor at Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan described the unnerving experience of walking daily past an intubated, critically ill colleague in her 30s, wondering who would be next.

Another doctor at a major New York City hospital described it as “a petri dish,” where more than 200 workers had fallen sick.

Two nurses in city hospitals have died.

When a significant part of Florida's older population gets killed off by DeSantis' stupidity....

I really hope the Republican voters in this state (many of whom are over 60) recognize this and vote accordingly. Impeachment maybe ? Not up on state impeachment.

His latest gambit is comparing the NYC subways to Florida's beaches. So asinine and stupid.

Sure, we'll shut down all the NYC subways. Then the roads will be jammed non-stop (if you can even get a ride and many New Yorkers' don't have cars and cannot afford cab fare or Uber fare). Fucking idiot.

Shut down the beaches ? The only ones who REALLY suffer are the tourist businesses. Even if I lived on the beach, I could still look at it and enjoy it, or go take a walk elsewhere.

eta: Ok I found the Florida impeachment clause in the state constitution. Of course with our legislature, it will never happen.

"Black Death"/Bubonic plague pandemic of 14th Century killed 30% to 60% of Europe's population

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Death

The Black Death, also known as the Pestilence, the Great Bubonic Plague, the Great Plague or the Plague, or less commonly the Great Mortality or the Black Plague, was the most devastating pandemic recorded in human history, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 75 to 200 million people in Eurasia, peaking in Europe from 1347 to 1351. The bacterium Yersinia pestis, which results in several forms of plague (septicemic, pneumonic and, the most common, bubonic), is believed to have been the cause.[4] The Black Death was the first major European outbreak of plague and the second plague pandemic. The plague created a number of religious, social and economic upheavals, with profound effects on the course of European history.

The Black Death probably originated in Central Asia or East Asia, from where it travelled along the Silk Road, reaching Crimea by 1343. From there, it was most likely carried by fleas living on the black rats that traveled on Genoese merchant ships, spreading throughout the Mediterranean Basin, reaching the rest of Europe via the Italian Peninsula.

The Black Death is estimated to have killed 30% to 60% of Europe's population. In total, the plague may have reduced the world population from an estimated 475 million to 350–375 million in the 14th century. It took 200 years for Europe's population to recover to its previous level, and some regions (such as Florence) only recovered by the 19th century. Outbreaks of the plague recurred until the early 20th century.
