Peak Atlantic hurricane season

(Tampa Bay Times) There is another tropical disturbance that forecasters can add to the other two they’re monitoring in the Atlantic Ocean.

All have the potential to develop into the next named storms of this busy Atlantic storm season.

None poses an imminent threat to Florida, according to the National Hurricane Center, but they all have a growing chance of developing into a tropical depression or storm next week. That concerns anyone who lives within range of a hurricane or tropical storm that comes roaring out of the Atlantic.

The one with the highest chance of developing into a named storm is Disturbance 2, a tropical wave located just southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands in the eastern Atlantic near the African coast. This area is known for being a nursery for tropical systems that eventually become hurricanes, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration hurricane researcher Jason Dunion. ............(more)

Florida man can't drive car he tried to steal from Uber driver at knifepoint

CLEARWATER, Fla. — The inability to drive a car kept one Florida man from completing a carjacking of his Uber driver, deputies say.

James Naylor, 61, and his girlfriend got into an Uber on Aug. 23 to take a ride home from the bar when the sheriff's office says Naylor pulled a knife on the driver.

From the backseat, Naylor put the knife to the driver's throat and told him to pull over, to which the driver complied, according to an arrest report. ...........(more)

MARION COUNTY, Fla. (WGFL) — A Dunnellon man is facing charges after deputies located him operating his vehicle in the nude.

Deputies received a call about a naked man knocking on a resident's door threatening to shoot someone he had been arguing with, according to deputies. Jerry Davis, 39, then attempted to get in his vehicle and leave, but he ended up backing into a ditch.

Davis was handed some clothes and asked to participate in field sobriety exercises, which he failed, deputies say. Davis was arrested and booked into the Marion County Jail for Driving Under the Influence. .............(more)

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — A Florida man was arrested Wednesday after deputies found more than a pound of cocaine in his truck and even more at his home, including some on top of a stack of bacon.

A dictator on downers: Slow-motion mass hysteria at the Republican convention

A dictator on downers: Slow-motion mass hysteria at the Republican convention
Donald Trump's speech was depressing and soulless, even for him. He can taste doom coming, and he doesn't like it

(Salon) would have loved to have been a fly on the wall as Donald Trump's dosage-tuning was done by a team of crack drug-doctors in an anteroom of the White House before he gave his Big Speech on Thursday night. Hand me that penlight, Tom. I want to give his pupils another quick check. His anisocoria looked a little pronounced when we hit him with the last dose a while ago … look right, Mr. President … now look left for me … that's good … uuuhhh … just as I thought. We better hit him with another two cc's before we give the OK to push him out there. If we don't get him tuned up just right, he'll never make it down those steps from the back portico…

Were you watching the last night of the Republican National Convention on Thursday night? It looked like a Nuremberg rally on Nembutal. Whatever they gave him before he took the stage overlooking the back lawn of the White House, they managed to get max-automaton out of him. Holding onto the podium like he was on the deck of a pitching ship at sea, Trump droned through 70 minutes of his acceptance speech like a seventh-grader giving a book report on "Great Expectations" in English class. He had that strange singsong delivery he does when he's reading off a teleprompter: sentence … pause … phrase … pause … now comes the big applause line and they clap and it says I can look at the audience and give them a smile and point to someone ...

Early in the speech, he uttered this gem in the exact same depressed, soulless tone and delivery he used when he assured his audience that his brother, Robert, was "looking down" on him from heaven: "In the new term as president, we will again build the greatest economy in history, quickly returning to full employment, soaring incomes and record prosperity." He sounded like he believed it about as much as he believed Melania would share his bed that night and he'd get lucky. He looked like he was going to burst into tears, the future looked so bright. It was like watching somebody on acid trying to wrangle their way through a bad trip, his face contorted in mid-zone between agony and ecstasy, belief and despair.

But in the words on the teleprompter, everything was peachy-keen. Everything he has done for four years has been perfect. Jobs? The jobs that have disappeared by the tens of millions since March? Why, they're up! Income? Income that's plummeted since businesses closed by the thousands and federal unemployment payments ended? Income is up! Pandemic? The virus that has sickened millions and killed more than 180,000 as schools open and outbreaks at colleges multiply? What pandemic? The wall? The wall that's being scaled with ladders and sawn through with $50 Home Depot battery powered saws? The wall that got blown down in a stiff wind a few weeks ago? The wall that Steve Bannon will be going to jail for? We built 300 miles of it! Our borders are more secure than they've ever been! Health care? You mean the coverage for pre-existing conditions we've been trying to kill in a federal lawsuit for the last couple of years? We're for it!

....(snip)....

Here's where we're at, folks: It's all about revenge. Republicans would vote for a squirrel in a hair-sprayed blonde wig if the squirrel promised them a fall football season and swore he would "own the libs." They want revenge for the '60s. They want revenge because the "libs" got laid more than they did in college. They want revenge because Obama had Dylan and Mick Jagger and Willie Dixon and Carole King in the White House, and all they've got is Kid Rock and Ted Nugent. They want revenge because we have more fun than they do. They want revenge because love is stronger than hate, and we believe in love. ...........(more)

Donald Trump's dark spectacle is just a rerun -- and America's sick of it

Donald Trump's dark spectacle is just a rerun — and America's sick of it
Trump keeps rolling out the same threatening vision of American chaos. Does he even understand he's in charge?

(Salon) The party conventions are over and we can take a breather for a few days until the fall campaign begins in earnest. The next big events will be the debates between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, and I think we'll all need to lay in a new supply of antacids and alcohol to get through those.

It's pretty clear that Trump's grand vision was to tape all the speeches of the Republican National Convention's first three nights in an empty auditorium to make his big night look bigger and better by comparison. I have no doubt he'll be desperate to see how his night did in the ratings. If he didn't beat Biden's numbers he'll be forced to call the TV ratings fake news and that will be very disappointing. He loves ratings.

Trump certainly put it all out there, staging a big partisan rally on the lawn of the White House, with all the flags in Washington as background, big screen TVs and a grand entrance from the balcony. (For a moment I thought he was planning to deliver it from there, as if he were Il Duce himself.)

The use of the people's house for this sort of event is unprecedented but obviously Trump didn't care about that. In fact, he seems to have taken pride in his defiance of the tradition, calling it more than a house but instead a "home," pointing toward it and bragging at one point, "The fact is, I'm here, and they're not." It was as if the White House were just another of his many properties, to be used for commercial and personal gain.

Trump knows how to bring the pomp, and the spectacle made clear why it's unethical to use the White House or national monuments for partisan purposes. The familiar grandeur of the White House and the grounds lent an imperial majesty to the event that was frankly un-American. Let's just say it's kind of gross to see the White House used like one of Saddam's palaces. .............(more)

Fox News Rejects Anti-Trump Ad During RNC, Teachers Union Says

(HuffPost) Fox News refused to air a TV ad blasting President Donald Trump’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic during the Republican National Convention, telling the labor union funding it that it was inaccurate.

The 30-second spot from the American Federation of Teachers’ super PAC, AFT Solidarity, slams Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) for what the union says is failure to provide adequate personal protective equipment to educators and plan for a safe return to public schools during the coronavirus outbreak.

“Enough is enough,” the ad says. “This November, say ‘no’ to Trump and McConnell’s chaos.”

Fox News told HuffPost that it informed the union’s representatives that it would air ad if the union corrected what it considered a questionable claim. .........(more)

Melania Underground?

Admittedly I didn't watch the RNC crapfest, but surely whatever she did doesn't merit THIS much discussion.
