Vox: "Don't call all American white supremacists "Nazis." Their ideology of hate is homegrown."

Using the term distances us from our history and reality.

“Nazi” feels like a foreign import, something that was defeated long ago. But the white supremacy that descended on Charlottesville — and that has a sequel rally planned for this weekend, in Washington, DC — is not some distant threat. It’s a homegrown ideology, and it’s one that we are far from defeating.

The Post-Star (Glens Falls, NY): "Letter to the editor: Let Trump be known as the fake president"

Editor:

The Fake President: This POTUS has made a dangerous decision to “brand” any opposing element as “fake news,” even the real news and real FBI/Justice Department intelligence. He has even gone as far as to rewrite the facts of what he said during his latest meeting with his supreme leader Putin in our national transcripts. These are not the actions of the real president of the United States, they are the actions of a compromised puppet of the KGB. They are the actions of a cruel dictator “wannabe” who has respect for no one or no thing except himself and his own interests. So let's go ahead and concede to allow this reckless abomination to continue to use his new brand — fake!

Trump was not elected by the populous; he won by Electoral College and was most likely assisted by Russia — fake election/fake results/fake president. He started with a fake inaugural crowd size. He has fake wealth, fake good health, fake full head of blonde hair, fake skin tone, fake teeth, fake relationship with his spouse, fake friends, allies and lawyers; fake loyalties, fake empathy, fake promises, fake leadership abilities. He's not even been able to fire a single individual from the White House to their face; fake courage, fake strength and fake convictions.

Yes! Let this “brand” follow him into history as we will all surely one day look back and see this disruptive beguiling man-baby as “The ‘Fake’ President.”

Common Dreams: Trump's Mean Boy Nation by Michael Winship

Never forget that the president's gang may be incompetent at a spectacular level but they're cruel and nasty to the bone

Our “I alone can fix it” president has gotten us in another fix, all right.

Of course, whenever he screws up big time, Mister I Alone starts blaming everyone but Mister I Alone.

He had admitted as much the other day when he was in Singapore for his summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un and bragged about the great deal he imagined he had made: “I may stand before you in six months and say, ‘Hey, I was wrong.’ I don’t know that I’ll ever admit that, but I’ll find some kind of an excuse.” He was, in his gruesome way, joking, but many a truth in jest, etc.

...

“Time and time again, the president has sought to shift the blame for his own decisions and their consequences to his political opponents,” James Hohmann wrote. “He’s doing it again this week by falsely blaming Democrats for his own policy of forcibly separating migrant children from their parents at the border, which he could stop with one phone call.”

Children in detention camps without their mothers and fathers, the youngest in “tender age” facilities—now there’s a tawdry, Orwellian use of a loving word like “tender” if ever there was one. At first, Trump saw this inhumane fiasco as a success while simultaneously claiming it wasn’t his fault, pointing his stubby little fingers at everyone else; Democrats, Congress, the courts, Obama, of course, and even George W. Bush.

...

Trump and his crowd are dedicated to curdling the milk of human kindness. They fill their pockets while destroying America in a misbegotten attempt to take it back to a time of ethnic purity that never really was while establishing a new Gilded Age where only a handful can prosper at the expense of everyone else. We are becoming a mean boy nation, a nation once of immigrants but now one of bullies and tyrants. Our president breaks everything he sees, including our democracy and our republic.

Only we can fix it.

Commission Brings Evidence Based Research & Recommendations for Effective Dementia Care Using Music

A new report providing a robust and unique examination into the benefits of music-based interventions for people with dementia will be presented to an audience of MPs, celebrities, policy-makers, academics, clinicians, and charity leaders at the House of Lords on Thursday, 18th January.

The International Longevity Centre – UK (ILC-UK), with support from The Utley Foundation, has created a Commission on Dementia and Music. The Commission explores the important role of music-based interventions in prevention, care & quality of life for people with dementia.

The power of music to improve the lives of people with dementia is known amongst experts and some caregivers. However up until now, only a few have been able to benefit, and the growing academic evidence and research base have largely been unknown. The Commission’s report pulls together evidence and highlights content to make a case for change, including recent research which suggests that regions of the brain associated with musical memory may overlap with regions relatively spared in Alzheimer’s disease.

Fact-checking President Trumps Fake News awards Washington Post

By Glenn Kessler January 17 at 10:31 PM

The “Fake News Awards” announced on the Republican National Committee website and touted by President Trump pose a conundrum: Does it really count if the news organization admits error?

Regular readers of The Fact Checker know that we do not award Pinocchios if a politician admits error. Everyone makes mistakes — and the point is not to play gotcha. News organizations operate in a competitive arena and mistakes are bound to be made. The key test is whether an error is acknowledged and corrected.

President Trump almost never admits error, even has he has made more than 2,000 false or misleading statements. So with that context, here’s an assessment of the “awards:”
