How Van Gogh inspired his artist friends to exchange self-portraits
When Van Gogh suggested swapping portraits with Paul Gauguin he awaited the paintings arrival with huge anticipation. What actually arrived proved to be a disappointment, with Van Gogh concluding that he himself was a better portraitist than his older and more experienced friend.
The story behind Gauguins Self-Portrait with Portrait of Emile Bernard (Les misérables)
(September 1888) is told in a new online catalogue of artworks collected by Vincent and his brother Theo and which are now at Amsterdams Van Gogh Museum.
Joost van der Hoeven, a researcher at the museum, has published entries on self-portraits by two of Van Goghs colleagues, Gauguin and Emile Bernard, done when the pair were working together in Pont-Aven in Brittany. Van Gogh, then in Arles, initiated the exchange, asking his two colleagues to paint portraits of each other.
The pair in Pont-Aven took a slightly different approach, since young Bernard felt intimidated at the idea of portraying Gauguin, who was 20 years his senior. Instead of portraits of their colleague, they each produced self-portraits, but included small sketches of their colleague in the background.

DeSantis agency sent $92 million in covid relief funds to donor-backed project

Mori Hosseini, who donated a golf simulator to the governors mansion, championed a new exchange on Interstate 95 that feeds into his housing and shopping center project
The administration of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) steered $92 million last year in leftover federal coronavirus stimulus money to a controversial highway interchange project that directly benefits a top political donor, according to state records.
The decision by the Florida Department of Transportation to use money from the 2021 American Rescue Plan for the I-95 interchange at Pioneer Trail Road near Daytona Beach fulfilled a years-long effort by Mori Hosseini, a politically connected housing developer who owns two large tracts of largely forested land abutting the planned interchange. The funding through the DeSantis administration, approved shortly after the governors reelection, expedited the project by more than a decade, according to state documents.
Hosseini plans to develop the land which includes a sensitive watershed once targeted for conservation by the state into approximately 1,300 dwelling units and 650,000 square feet of nonresidential use, including an outdoor village shopping district. He has called the Woodhaven development, which has already begun construction, his best project yet and promised to pull out all the stops for its success.
With or without the interchange, we would have built Woodhaven there, but it certainly helps, he told the Daytona Beach News Journal in March 2019.

'Uh-oh': Manhattan DA's Office seeks Melania Trump emails in hush money case
According to Associated Press reporter Michael R. Sisak, the Manhattan DA's Office is seeking "e-mails exchanged among Trump Organization employees and the White House" as well as "e-mails between Trump's wife, Melania, and Rhona Graff, a longtime company executive."
Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, former senior adviser to Melania Trump and author of the 2020 book "Melania and Me: The Rise and Fall of My Friendship With the First Lady," responded to AP's reporting on Twitter.
Wolkoff tweeted, "Melania Trump used several email addresses, texts, and Signal to communicate with me and others while working in the White House and prosecutors want to see them."
