Trump has ruined us, but Republicans moved us there for years

While there are a great many people fighting the good fight to push back against what they're doing, the last few weeks in particular has shown a lot more of who we have become in that fight, at least online and that often bleeds into our real lives.

“Beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster... for when you gaze long into the abyss. The abyss gazes also into you.” ― Friedrich Nietzsche

Maybe it's just me. I've been here since DU was put together when they first started using the DC Forum software for it (as I used it on my own site way back in the day). And we've seen a lot of ups and downs over the years. But this year has pushed so many of us to become so full of the kind of vitriol and hate that we see in others that it's poisoning so much of ourselves.

It'll take decades to fix the damage that's been done to programs, institutions, and trust in government when we get past all of this.

But how many people are ruining themselves by becoming the things they hate?

I know Michelle Obama got roundly mocked by many for her high road comments during the convention last year. But if she said them now I'm convinced a good percentage more around these parts would disparage her even more for it because "we can't fight them by taking the high road."

Hence we become what we hate.
