Caught On Camera: Couple Spews Anti-Asian Slurs In Newport Beach Parking Lot

Lunar New Year is a time of celebration and new beginnings, but Eugene Moy’s Lunar New Year celebrations were cut short when he saw the viral and now infamous video of the couple yelling thing, like, “Go back to China!” in the parking lot of Fashion Island in Newport.

The couple can also be seen making obscene gestures at the man taking the video. The original TikTok user has now made their account private, but the video went viral on Twitter.

The man making the hurtful remarks was quickly identified as Roger Miller, an employee of the City of Coronado. Also in the video is his wife, Sandra, a teacher at a private school in Riverside County.

“It’s just unfortunate that children can be exposed to these kinds of attitudes,” said Moy.

Moy is active in the Asian American community. As a founding member of Riverside’s Save Our Chinatown Committee, he fought to stop a developer from building a medical office on a Riverside Chinatown archeological site.

Before death, Reid emptied campaign accounts

The day before he died, federal campaign accounts affiliated with former U.S. Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) reported doling out more than $133,000 in donations to a broad swath of federal, state and local-level Democratic candidates in Nevada.

Reid, who had been out of office for nearly six years before his death, was able to make those political donations through a loophole in federal campaign finance law that allows retired elected officials to continue to use their campaign accounts for years after they leave office.

In a 2013 advisory opinion, the Federal Election Commission advised candidates and campaigns to wind down expenses within six months of leaving office, but there are no hard and fast rules as to when a campaign has to close down. It’s a loophole that’s been exploited by dozens of former federal office-holders who used their campaign accounts to buy iPads, country club memberships and other questionable expenses, according to a 2018 Tampa Bay Times investigation.

Reid’s campaign account and leadership PAC (Friends for Harry Reid and Searchlight Leadership Fund, respectively) have continued to quietly operate and give money to Democratic candidates and charitable causes in the years since the former senator left office. While other elected officials in Nevada have also made use of so-called “zombie” campaigns, Reid’s reported expenditures are notable both for their scope, length of time since his last election (2010) and activity shortly before his demise.

Utah parents could sue education officials or teachers for almost any reason under proposed bill

A new bill in the Utah Legislature would give parents the authorization to sue schools or education officials for any perceived infringement of their rights as a parent.

SB157 from Sen. John Johnson, R-Ogden, gives parents blanket legal standing “obtain judicial and other legal relief,” to exercise their rights as a parent.

The proposal then lists several areas where parents would be permitted to assert their rights when it comes to the education of their children, including curriculum, textbooks, classroom materials, teacher training and courses of study among other things.

Johnson’s bill is stuffed with language to make it crystal clear that parents are the ultimate authority when it comes to the education of their children. Parents have the “primary authority and responsibility for the education” of their children, and the only job of state and local government is to “support and assist” rather than “interfere or conflict with” parents. The Legislature, school boards and public schools are given the mission to “respect” and “protect” the interest of parents.

The bill appears to create a legal free-for-all in which a parent to file a lawsuit and seek monetary damages if they feel any aspect of their child’s education steps on their rights as a parent or if they find it objectionable. That could include suing the Legislature for passing a law they think infringes on their rights down to suing individual teachers over an assignment in class.

Boston Elected Officials Condemn "Hateful Attacks" On Mayor Michelle Wu

BOSTON (WBZNewsRadio) - A group of Boston elected officials of color released a statement Tuesday condemning what they're calling "ongoing threats of violence and hateful attacks" directed at Boston Mayor Michelle Wu.

The mayor has recently been under pressure over the city's mask and vaccine mandates. She's also been met with protesters at City Hall, as well as outside her home in Roslindale.

Right now, face masks are required in all indoor public settings in the City of Boston for anyone over the age of 2 years old. People are also required to show proof of Covid-19 vaccination in order to enter certain indoor spaces. First responders in the city are suing over plans to mandate the vaccine without a testing option.

“Since beginning her term, Mayor Wu has met the moment and worked tirelessly to address many of the greatest challenges facing our communities—including combatting the ongoing pandemic that has robbed us of more than 1,600 lives across the City of Boston alone. It is due to her brave and steadfast leadership, her commitment to science and the public health—including her common-sense and life-saving vaccine mandates—that the City of Boston is making necessary progress to combat this pandemic and protect our most vulnerable,” according to the statement.

Michelle Malkin Banned From Airbnb After Attending Hate Fest

Far-right columnist and white nationalist ally Michelle Malkin has been booted from Airbnb after attending the white nationalist organization American Renaissance's gathering in Nashville last November.

“Consistent with our policies, if we become aware of users who are members of or are actively affiliated with hate groups, we remove them from Airbnb,” company spokesperson Ben Breit told The Daily Beast on Wednesday. The site also banned Malkin’s husband, she wrote, since her trips were often booked from his account.

“The new twist in my case is Airbnb going after my HUSBAND for simply being married to me. Are my kids next? How about other #AmericaFirst families?” Malkin, a close ally of white nationalist Nicholas Fuentes' extremist “America First” movement, fumed Wednesday afternoon on Twitter.

“Of course, this latest & ongoing escalation of the deplatforming wars is not just about Airbnb or me,” continued Malkin. “It’s about curtailing underlying power of SPLC & ADL to oppress their most effective political opponents & sabotage every aspect of our professional & personal lives.”

GOP SENATOR WANTS TO PUNISH TEACHERS WHOSE LESSONS DON'T LINE UP WITH STUDENTS' RELIGIONS

SB 1470, the “Students’ Religious Belief Protection Act,” is set to be officially introduced into the Education Committee next week. If passed, it will allow parents and guardians to file complaints against individual teachers who “promotes positions in the classroom or at any function of the public school that is in opposition to closely held religious beliefs of students.” Standridge, whose campaign website describes him as having been “raised with strong Christian values” doesn’t elaborate on which religious beliefs he had in mind while authoring the bill, so I leave it to you, reader, to speculate wildly for yourself.

Crucially, the bill’s language is appropriately vague enough as to leave wide open what being “in opposition” actually constitutes. Could, for instance, a Jewish family be able to complain if a teacher were to wish their class “Merry Christmas”? Would a polytheist, or atheist, have grounds to complain at the “one nation under god” line while reciting the pledge of allegiance — which Standridge himself pushed to require in Oklahoma public schools? Is simply raising the fact that abortions exist and are legal (for now anyway) enough to legitimize a complaint by an evangelical christian student? And let’s not forget what this means for biology teachers who include lessons on evolution, as outlined in Oklahoma’s official Academic Standards for Science.

You start to see the problem...

According to the bill, school employees found guilty of violating Standridge’s standards of religious sanctity face a fine of $10,000, and risk losing their job entirely.

Rudy Giuliani Unmasked as 'The Masked Singer', Judges Walk Off Stage

EXCLUSIVE, SPOILER ALERT: Rudy Giuliani was last week unmasked as an exiting costumed contestant in the taping of the first episode of Fox’s popular prime time show The Masked Singer. Deadline hears that as soon as they saw Giuliani, judges Ken Jeong & Robin Thicke quickly left the stage in protest.

The show is known for its jaw-dropping surprises when celebrity contestants shed their headpieces after they are eliminated. The reaction to Giuliani was perhaps the most polarizing the show has seen since 2020. The Masked Singer faced criticism then when another controversial Republican politician, Sarah Palin, was unveiled as The Bear. We aren’t revealing which costume Rudy wore or what his swan song was — his exit episode won’t air until next month — so you can still revel in his reveal. The theme of the new season is The Good, The Bad and The Cuddly; your political affiliation determines which category Giuliani fits.

Deadline hears that while Jeong & Thicke exited (they eventually returned), Jenny McCarthy and Nicole Scherzinger remained onstage. They bantered with Giuliani, a controversial figure for pressing what is widely derided as a baseless claim that the last presidential election was stolen from his client Donald Trump.
