Ohio girl, 16, fatally shot after her father thought she was an intruder, mother says

A 16-year-old Ohio girl was fatally shot by her father after he thought she was an intruder breaking into their home, according to a 911 call obtained by NBC News.

The girl, Janae Hairston, died Wednesday at a Columbus hospital about an hour after she was shot in the garage of her parents' home on Piper Bend Drive.

In the eight-minute 911 call, Hairston's mother told a dispatcher that her husband accidentally shot their daughter. The hysterical mother begged for an ambulance as a man in the background said repeatedly, "Breathe, baby."

"My husband made a mistake and shot her because he thought she was an intruder," the mother said. "She was in our garage and my husband just didn’t know what was going on. Oh, my God."

The mother said she thinks the teen was shot in the chest. Both of the parents could be heard asking what the girl was doing in the garage.

Rep. Ayanna Pressley Tests Positive For COVID-19

BOSTON (AP) — U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley said Friday that she has tested positive for COVID-19.

The Massachusetts Democrat said that after experiencing symptoms, she received a positive, breakthrough positive COVID-19 test result Friday.

“Thankfully, my symptoms are relatively mild, and I am grateful to be fully vaccinated and boosted. I am currently isolating and following all health protocols in order to mitigate further spread and keep my loved ones and community safe,” Pressley said in a written statement.

Pressley said she was grateful for the scientists, researchers, and frontline health care workers who have worked to develop vaccines that are safe and effective.

“Vaccines save lives,” she added. “I encourage everyone to do their part by getting vaccinated, boosted and masking up.”

What happens when you have an all-women city council? New Mexico is about to find out.

At city hall in Las Cruces, New Mexico, a wall of photographs displays the faces of elected city council members. Come January, the photos will all be of women.

Becky Corran’s face will be new on the wall, as will that of Becki Graham. They’ll join Yvonne Flores, who won reelection in November, and three other women who were not up for election this year. The Las Cruces City Council, for the first time ever, will be all women.

Technically the chair of the council is the mayor, and opposite the wall of city council members is another wall of photographs revealing that only men have served as mayors in Las Cruces.

Las Cruces, a city of roughly 100,000 people in the southern part of the state, has a long to-do list of policy issues around the pandemic, the economy and general equity. How an all-women city council might address them is yet to be determined. But the fact that it joins a short list of all-women or nearly all-women governing bodies is a sign of how underrepresented women remain at all levels of government.

Louisiana Judge Resigns Over Racial Slurs

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) — Michelle Odinet has resigned as Lafayette City Court Judge. Her resignation comes after weeks of public scrutiny following the surfacing of a video taken in her home in which racial slurs are used.

According to Odinet’s attorney, Dane Ciolino, he turned a letter of resignation into the Louisiana Supreme Court on her behalf on Friday, Dec. 31.

In the letter addressed to Chief Justice Weimer, Odinet said she takes “full responsibility for the hurtful words” used in the video and she apologized.

Odinet took a leave of absence that began on Dec. 14, the day after the video surfaced. Since then, Gov. Edwards, Lafayette Mayor-President Guillory, Lafayette City Marshal Thomas, and multiple other public officials condemned the use of the language. Some officials even called for her resignation.

Unvaxxed High School Sweethearts Die of COVID on Same Day

A unvaccinated California couple died of COVID within hours of each other, days after testing positive. KNBC reports that Alvaro and Sylvia Fernandez of Loma Linda had been married for 25 years and had four children. “Their love story began as High School sweethearts at the tender age of fifteen. Their love grew over the years as their family grew,” family members wrote on GoFundMe. Although Alvaro, 44, had diabetes and other health problems, he had not been vaccinated against the coronavirus. “He wanted to wait and do more research,” said his sister, Alma Hernandez. “He Googled information. He didn’t want to believe everything that was on the news... This is kind of an eye opener for everybody in my family that whoever is not vaccinated definitely should have their vaccinations.”
