GOP Wayne County election official in 2020 ballot dispute dies from COVID-19

DETROIT – A Republican election official who caused controversy by initially refusing to certify 2020 Detroit-area results in favor of President Joe Biden has died after being admitted to a hospital with COVID-19.

William Hartmann's death this week was reported to the Michigan Republican Party, spokesman Gustavo Portela said.

Hartmann, 63, was a member of the Wayne County Board of Canvassers, a low profile panel that briefly burst into the national spotlight a year ago when it tied, 2-2, and failed to certify election results.
But Hartmann and fellow GOP member Monica Palmer changed course that same night after a wave of harsh criticism during the public comment period of the stormy meeting.

Hartmann insisted that he didn't bow to pressure but changed his vote only after being assured that a post-election audit would be conducted.

Earlier in November, Hartmann's sister told Facebook friends that her brother was on a ventilator with pneumonia related to COVID-19.

Michigan Shooter's Parents Had Been Called Into School That Morning: Sheriff

The shooter who allegedly killed four students and injured seven, including a teacher, at Michigan’s Oxford High School was previously flagged by administrators for “behavior in the classroom that they felt was concerning,” Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said Wednesday.

Authorities have identified the suspect as 15-year-old sophomore Ethan Crumbley. His parents had been brought into the school the morning of the shooting for a face-to-face meeting about their son’s behavior, according to Bouchard. He would not disclose what the behavior was, and police were not informed about any potential issues prior to the tragic event.

At a separate Wednesday press conference, Oakland County prosecutor Karen McDonald told reporters that Crumbley has been charged as an adult with one count of terrorism, four counts of first-degree murder, seven counts of assault with intent to murder, and 12 counts of possession of a firearm. More charges may be added later, said McDonald.

McDonald said evidence shows Crumbley started planning the attack “well before the incident.”

Democrats Roar Back In Georgia

After a lackluster general Election Night in November, Democratic leaning candidates roared back Tuesday to flip at least seven local races across Georgia Tuesday, and fended off Republican challengers in Brunswick and Forest Park.

In Warner Robins, voters elected LaRhonda Patrick to be the first woman and first Black mayor to lead the city. Patrick defeated incumbent Mayor Randy Toms two weeks after Toms announced the city owes $800,000 to the IRS because of years of inaccurate filings and ignored warnings.

Oregon governor to call special session to approve renter protections

Oregon Gov. Kate Brown (D) on Tuesday called for a special session for the state legislature to approve state funding for rental assistance and extend eviction protections issued due to the coronavirus pandemic, The Associated Press reported

Brown has proposed that protections should be extended for those who applied for rental assistance; landlords should be paid in full for the rent that is due; up to $90 million in additional rental assistance should be awarded to low-income tenants through the winter and an additional $100 million should be allotted for the transition from pandemic-related emergency rental assistance to long-term services.

Brown also said she working with federal officials at the White House and Department of Treasury to secure more federal emergency rental assistance funding for the state, according to the AP.

“It is clear that a state solution is needed to address the urgent and immediate needs of Oregon renters,” Brown said.
