High-profile attorney in Mexico representing Ethan Couch
A high-profile Mexican attorney known for winning big cases has confirmed that he is representing Ethan Couch, the Tarrant County teen whose “affluenza” defense earned him probation in four drunken-driving deaths and who is fighting attempts to extradite him from Mexico.
Fernando Benitez of Tijuana said in a Twitter message to KXAS-TV (NBC5) that he wants to make sure Couch, 18, is treated lawfully.
“My interest is that if they are looking for his extradition to the United States, that it proceeds only according to the constitution and the law,” he wrote in Spanish.
He did not immediately respond to a question about who is paying him.

‘Family values’ conservative: If women can breastfeed in public, I can grab their breasts
In a recent Facebook post, New Hampshire state representative Josh Moore said that if a law to ban topless female nudity fails, men should be able to squeeze exposed nipples in public.
Moore was responding to a post by a Democrat colleague who opposes the bill, when the two got into a squabble, prompting Moore to make the comments.
Currently in New Hampshire, it is legal for both men and women to expose their nipples in public, but a state bill would make it a misdemeanor for women to expose their nipples, even for breastfeeding. The bill is backed solely by Republican men.
State representative Amanda Bouldin went to Facebook to voice her issues with the bill and its Republican support. Bouldin found irony int the fact that Republicans claim to believe in freedom and small government, but are now attempting to ban the female breast.

Dallas Struggles to Overcome Segregated Legacy
DALLAS — By most accounts, census tract 166.05 is not a particularly desirable place to live. Tucked between two major highways in southwest Dallas, the neighborhood is characterized by clusters of ramshackle, one-story houses, huge swaths of vacant land and big warehouses and storage centers.
More than 40 percent of people living in the census tract have incomes below the poverty level, a proportion that more than doubled since 2000, according to U.S. Census data. Crime rates and levels of slum and blight are also high, according to the Dallas-based housing advocacy group the Inclusive Communities Project.
Federal rent assistance programs shouldn't be used to place poor families in such a neighborhood, the project believes. And yet more than 100 families who receive federal rent subsidies known as Housing Choice Vouchers through Dallas County have been placed there.
Such placement “perpetuates segregation,” the group wrote in a strongly worded letter to the Dallas County Housing Agency in October. The vast majority of Dallas County’s 4,200 rent-subsidy users are black, and they are being steered to “minority-concentrated, high poverty areas,” the group said.

TEA Suspends Progreso ISD School Board
The Texas Education Agency sent Progreso school district officials two letters Wednesday stating the district will have a state-appointed board of managers starting January and its accreditation status will be lowered.
The letters are a result of an investigation that began in November 2013 after reports of corruption and mismanagement of funds led to the arrest of three district officials and prompted the TEA to appoint a management team to oversee the district.
After a nearly two-year-long investigation into the district, TEA Commissioner Michael Williams notified district officials Sept. 23 of his decision to appoint a new superintendent and lower the district’s accreditation status to “accredited warned” for the 2014-15 school year.
In November, school district attorney Kevin O’Hanlon and trustees Juan Ramos and Alejandro Alanis attended a formal review meant to allow district officials a chance to present their case to the commissioners as to why the agency shouldn’t go to such lengths.

Tea party aims for establishment GOP’s seats in Congress
Challengers to the Texas Republican establishment have scored impressive victories in the last few election cycles, knocking off several state senators and House members, including a few veteran North Texas lawmakers.
But as the insurgency takes hold in state government, the Republican congressional delegation has been largely untouched.
Most incumbents have easily beaten back challenges from the tea party and other segments of the grass-roots movement, even as their counterparts in state government have suffered humbling defeats.
Activists outside the GOP establishment, successful in smaller legislative districts, haven’t figured out how to operate in a larger, more expensive arena that heavily favors incumbents.

Jefferson Davis statue in New Orleans vandalized, TV station says
The statue of Confederate President Jefferson Davis in New Orleans' Mid-City area has been spray-painted with the name of political activist Angela Davis, WWL television reported Friday (Jan. 1). The statue is one of four Confederate monuments recently targeted for removal by Mayor Mitch Landrieu and the City Council.
A photo published by WWL shows the name Angela Davis scrawled in yellow on the base of the statute, located at Jefferson Davis Parkway and Canal Street. Davis, a retired college professor, gained national notice in 1969 after being fired from her teaching position at the University of California at Los Angeles for her social activism and membership in the Communist Party.
New Orleans City Hall has agreed not to remove the Confederate monuments until after a court hearing on Jan. 14. Several groups opposed to the removals filed a lawsuit seeking to stop the city.
