marble falls's JournalHelp. I have at least 6 or 7 cartons of books and a pile of magazines. I've been taking them ...
to the VA hospital in Temple when I was going in for my treatment. However Covid has fixed that. I don't go so much and they are not taking books or magazines. I had people who were bringing them to me to take with us. I can't take them to assisted living homes: covid, and also not to the VA clinic in Austin. And I've heard that a lot of places won't be taking them anymore even after Covid. A lot of thrift shops keep them for so long and then they put them in the dumpster.
I'm thinking about giving them to the used book store up the street.
Anyone with any ideas????
Seriously need help.
"Zombie cicadas" infected with mind-controlling fungus return to West Virginia
"Zombie cicadas" infected with mind-controlling fungus return to West Virginia

When a male cicada is infected with Massospora, researchers found it flicks its wings like a female, a known mating call. This behavior attracts healthy male cicadas, facilitating the spread of the fungus, which contains chemicals including psilocybin, found in hallucinogenic mushrooms.
<snip>
Researchers described the gruesome details of the fungus' process as a "disturbing display of B-horror movie proportions." The spores eat away at the genitalia, butts and abdomens of the cicadas until they eventually fall off, replacing them with fungal spores a brutal process for the insects, which just spent more than a decade underground.
The cicadas begin to decay, but rather than immediately die, they fly around and infect others. Because of the infection's mind-controlling abilities, the insects appear to behave as if nothing is wrong.
<snip>
"They're very docile," Lovett said. "You can walk right up to one, pick it up to see if it has the fungus (a white to yellowish plug on its back end) and set it back down. They're not a major pest in any way. They're just a really interesting quirky insect that's developed a bizarre lifestyle."

Tea Party Congressman Introduces A Hilarious Amendment To Stop Obama From Golfing

Conservative Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) introduced legislation that would, in effect, prevent President Barack Obama from playing golf unless the White House reinstates public tours.
The amendment, part of the House's stopgap measure to fund the government, comes in response to the White House's decision Saturday to cancel public tours as a result of the sequester a move that has caused backlash from Republican lawmakers.
"Canceling all self-guided White House tours is the latest shameless political stunt by the president, who is twisting basic government efficiency into an extreme consequence," Republican Rep. Tom Graves said in a statement.
<snip>
"None of the funds made available by a division of this Act may be used to transport the President to or from a golf course until public tours of the White House resume," Gohmert's amendment reads.

Washingtons police chief took the blame. But Nixon was behind the decision.

As the Mayday action unfolded on May 3, twin-engine Chinook helicopters roared down by the Washington Monument, disgorging troops from the 82nd Airborne Division, who trotted off to the Capitol and other hot spots. In all, the administration summoned 10,000 soldiers and Marines, turning the center of the nations capital into an armed camp with thousands of troops lining the bridges and principal streets, helicopters whirring overhead and helmeted police charging crowds of civilians with nightsticks and tear gas, according to a New York Times report. More than 12,000 people were swept up over three days, the largest mass arrest in U.S. history.

Mr. Kleindienst overrode their concerns with an opinion from the Justice Departments legal counsel, William Rehnquist, who had been his protégé in their home state, Arizona. Mr. Rehnquist said the act didnt apply; the president had inherent constitutional authority to use troops to protect the functioning of the government. (Mr. Rehnquist would be named to the Supreme Court by Mr. Nixon later that year and elevated to chief justice under President Ronald Reagan.)
Mr. Kleindienst faced another obstacle. David Packard, the deputy secretary of defense, pointed out the procedures a president should follow, under the Insurrection Act, in calling forth the military: a formal order that demonstrators disperse and, if they dont, an executive order to send in troops. Mr. Nixons predecessor, Lyndon Johnson, had done this during the riots in Washington in 1968 after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. The White House, however, wanted to keep its involvement under wraps. According to Mr. Haldemans diary, Mr. Nixon let Mr. Packard know he wanted troops sent without any public presidential action. The White House spread the fake news that city officials had requested the military help.
<snip>
As criticism mounted that the dragnet was unconstitutional (courts ultimately agreed, awarding detainees millions in damages), Mr. Nixons involvement was suspected. The White House denied it. Aides instructed the police chief, Mr. Wilson, to take the heat. I wish to emphasize the fact that I made all tactical decisions relating to the recent disorders, he said in a public statement. I took these steps because I felt they were necessary to protect the safety of law-abiding citizens and to maintain order in the city. The tapes show Mr. Nixons men were delighted.

According to Deputy Chief Tom Robinson, the Washoe County Sheriffs Office asked Reno police for help on July 26 to assist in a traffic stop. Requests like this are not uncommon, he said. When police arrived, they found deputies pointing stun guns at a 43-year-old Reno resident who wasnt complying with commands, according to this account.
Body cam footageostensibly from a Washoe County deputys point of viewshowed that law enforcement official firing his stun gun. He had moved around the suspect and opened fire, but he missed, and struck a Reno police officer in the knee, according to Robinson. That caused the officer to then shoot the suspect in the right shoulder with a firearm, according to this account.
<snip>
In the coming months, the Reno Police Department office of internal affairs will review all relevant information from this case, and will make a determination as to whether the officers tactics, drawing and use of a deadly weapon, and use of force is within the policies and standardized procedures of the Reno Police Department, RPD Public Information Officer Travis Warren said. Those findings will be submitted to the chief of police for review.

The suspect, who was not named, received a non-life threatening injury, and was released from the hospital. The SPD cited him for reckless driving, and obstructing or resisting officers.

Well, this whole thing is because of them n-----s in Detroit, Tom Eckerle, who was elected to his position on the Leelanau County Road Commission in 2018, told his colleague at the start of the public meeting.
<snip>
I can say anything I want, Eckerle said at the meeting, which the public could listen to via a dial-in number, the Leelanau Enterprise first reported. Black Lives Matter has everything to do with taking the country away from us.
Eckerles remarks came the same week Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-Mich.) declared racism a public health crisis because of the disparate impact the coronavirus pandemic has had in Black, Native American and Latino communities. Michigan has reported at least 94,656 cases and 6,506 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

I dont regret calling it an n----r, Eckerle told Interlochen Public Radio. A n----r is a n----r is a n----r. Thats not a person whatsoever.
