“In the 12th district, history will record that the red wave started here,” Pence said to a large ovation from the capacity crowd. He mentioned the Aug. 7 date of the special election at least 10 times in his 20 minute speech.

“History shows the first mid-term election for the party in the White House is tough. That’s what conventional wisdom says,” the vice president said. “But I think we all know what President Donald Trump thinks of conventional wisdom.”

The contest for Ohio’s 12th Congressional District, which Trump won by 11 points in 2016, has been rated a toss-up. A Democrat hasn’t won in the district since 1980, and he only lasted one term.

With crucial mid-term elections coming up, the central Ohio region is being looked at as a harbinger of the November election and something of a referendum on the popularity of Trump.

The seat became vacant when Pat Tiberi, a Delaware County Republican, stepped down in January.

Before Pence spoke, Ohio GOP Chair Jane Timken urged the crowd to get to the polls, saying, “There is too much at stake in this election to stay home. Tell your family, friends and neighbors to vote August 7.”

As Republicans have since the May primary, Timken tried to link Democrat Danny O’Connor with Nancy Pelosi, current House minority leader.

O’Connor has repeatedly said he would not support Pelosi to lead House Democrats, or potentially as speaker. He did say in a TV interview last week he would back “whoever” the Democratic Party puts forward if he had to cast the deciding vote.

Before introducing Pence, Balderson told the crowd he will support Medicare and social security, citing his mother as an example of the importance of health care for the elderly. He did not mention, however, his support for raising the eligibility age to qualify for both Medicare and social security.

With O’Connor holding his own in the polls and doing well in early voting numbers, Republicans are pumping money into the race that was not initially supposed to be as close as now predicted.

I disagree strongly. This election is not about Trump/Clinton/Sanders/Stein. This election is ...

about getting a working Congress. No matter who else might have won the election we didn't have a good Congress for either a President Clinton or a President Sanders.

I am not going to discuss this any further with you for two reasons: it is against the ToS here to refight the 2016 Primaries, and most important of all: the 2018 elections are not about 2016. Its about getting a real working Democratic Congress. Period.

I am also sick and tired about about the constant hair pulling about Clinton/Sanders. The problem right this very fucking second is cheetolini. Its a distraction and I bet there are going to be Russian trolls pushing the fight over Sanders/Clinton to divide us from the goal of getting real working Democratic local and state legislators and a real working Democratic national Congress.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A 13-year-old entrepreneur who was reported for operating a hot dog stand without a license is still in business thanks to city officials who could’ve shut him down.

The Minneapolis Department of Health received a complaint this summer about the hot dog stand that Jaequan Faulkner had set up outside his home. He called the operation Mr. Faulkner’s Old-Fashioned Hot Dogs.

But instead of closing down the operation, the agency decided to help — health inspectors even pitched in to pay for the $87 permit, Minnesota Public Radio reported.

Daniel Huff, the department’s environmental health director, said the agency was excited to help a young man with such drive. Huff also contacted the Northside Economic Opportunity Network, which gave Jaequan some pointers on running a business and keeping his stand clean.

Jaequan said he’s overwhelmed by the support.

“I was actually kinda surprised, ’cause usually I would have one person at a time help me, but then with so many people coming at once, I’m like, wow. I realized how much people enjoy it,” he said.

Jaequan began operating — with a license — on Monday. He started the hot dog stand with help from his uncle, who said Jaequan handles about 90 percent of the business.

The teen now works four-hour days, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and spends his free time “thinking about what’s next.” Maybe a food card, so he can take his operation on the road.

Jaequan said he’s also thinking about donating some of his earnings to charities that help people with depression.

As the fallout from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s controversial remarks defending Holocaust deniers continues, BuzzFeed News reports that the billionaire secretly called President Donald Trump after his election.

According to BuzzFeed, Zuckerberg “congratulated the Trump team on its victory and successful campaign, which spent millions of dollars on advertising with Facebook.”

BuzzFeed says it “obtained company presentations and memos that show the social media giant viewed Trump’s campaign as an ‘innovator’ of a fast-moving, test-oriented approach to marketing on Facebook.”

Facebook disseminated Russian propaganda during the 2016 election through its platform, which did not successfully identify and reject the content from our foreign foe.

By Facebok's own estimates, 126 million people saw Russia-linked content during the 2016 election cycle.

Neither Facebook or the White House would offer comment to BuzzFeed on the report.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police, the Game Commission bulldozer operator was using the machine to improve access to fields on game lands when he spotted a car well off the road in the brush and called police. Officers from nearby Bernville Borough were first on the scene and quickly found a plot containing 10 growing pot plants.

The two men were Longenecker and his long-time friend David Brook Light, 54. Light was quickly taken into custody by the Bernville chief of police, but Longenecker eluded immediate capture. The state police arrived on the scene and ordered one of their helicopters to join the search. The chopper pilot spotted Longenecker in the brush but then lost him. Meanwhile, a state trooper and the bulldozer operator were roaring through the brush looking for him.

"An attempt to hail the other male was unsuccessful," Beohm said in a news release. "The helicopter lost sight of the male and was giving directions to the bulldozer of his last location. The Game Commission employee and a Trooper were on the bulldozer driving through the thick underbrush. The bulldozer stopped in the underbrush. The second male was located under the rear of the bulldozer deceased."

First, Trooper Boehm denied that Longenecker died as a result of a police pursuit. "They were just trying to locate this guy with use of a helicopter," he explained.

Then he suggested that Longenecker may have died of natural causes. "The reason it’s unclear if Longenecker was struck and killed by the bulldozer is that Longenecker, because of his age, could have had a heart attack while fleeing through the dense thicket," Boehm said.

But that attempted diversion was foiled on Tuesday when the preliminary autopsy report came out. That report found that Longenecker died of traumatic injuries after being run over by the bulldozer. A final ruling on the cause of death awaits toxicology tests, but it is clear that he died after being run over by the bulldozer.

"This awful event could have and should have been prevented," said national NORML executive director Erik Altieri. "This tragedy is a direct result of our nation’s draconic and failed criminalization of marijuana. Not only was the use of resources in this matter excessive and the tactics highly questionable, but more importantly a man lost his life over the act of growing a plant that is now legally regulated in a majority of US states. No matter your opinion on marijuana legalization, the penalty for growing cannabis should never be an extrajudicial death sentence."

"As a former prosecutor and practicing criminal defense attorney, it is inconceivable to me that a man lost his life during an investigation of a very small grow," said Pittsburgh NORML executive director Patrick Nightengale. "Had he been arrested, prosecuted and convicted, Pennsylvania’s sentencing guidelines would have provided for a sentence of probation. The heavy-handed tactics employed cannot be justified by the seizure of ten plants. I do not understand why law enforcement couldn’t simply wait. A vehicle was on scene and another individual was taken into custody. Rip the plants, run the plate and ask the arrestee what his friend’s name is. How difficult is that?"

WASHINGTON — Rod J. Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general, on Friday announced new charges against 12 Russian intelligence officers accused of hacking the Democratic National Committee, the Clinton presidential campaign and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. The announcement came just a few days before President Trump is expected to meet with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia in Helsinki, Finland.

The 11-count indictment includes charges of conspiracy by the Russian intelligence officials against the United States, money laundering and attempts to break into state boards of elections and other government agencies.

The indictment is part of the special counsel’s investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential campaign.
