They Asked for PPE and Got Body Bags Instead--She Turned Them Into a Healing Dress

They Asked for PPE and Got Body Bags Instead—She Turned Them Into a Healing Dress
CECILIA NOWELL
February 4, 2021 2:31 PM

In March, public health researcher Abigail Echo-Hawk (Pawnee) and her colleagues at the Seattle Indian Health Board reached out to their local and federal partners for more PPE so they could continue serving Washington’s Native population. When they received a large package a few weeks later they were elated—until they opened it and found a stack of body bags inside.

“We’re not a hospital system. We don’t have inpatient, we don’t have hospital beds. If somebody died here, we would call an ambulance,” said Echo-Hawk. “I went home and I just cried that night, which I unfortunately do often.” To her, the body bags were a symbol of how little the United States values Native lives and a foreshadowing of the massive outbreaks that would take hold on reservations like the Navajo Nation. In Native communities, the mortality rate from COVID has been nearly double that of the rate among white populations—revealing weaknesses in the Indian Health Service and putting Indigenous elders at risk.

Later, Echo-Hawk took some of the body bags home, where slowly, a vision emerged: She decided to transform one of the body bags into a traditional ribbon dress. The dress would comment on the ways the pandemic has disproportionately impacted Native communities and honor the women whose lives have been put in danger by rising rates of domestic violence and assault.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, Native women are 10 times more likely to be murdered than women of other ethnicities. Echo-Hawk’s team at the Urban Indian Health Institute, a division within the Seattle Indian Health Board, reports that Native women are also 2.5 times more likely to experience rape or sexual assault. This tragedy has only increased during the pandemic. In August, Debra O’Gara (Tlingit and Yup’ik), senior policy specialist at the Alaska Native Women’s Resource Center published a press release outlining how COVID had exacerbated the long-standing problem.

Marilyn Manson bragged about abusing Evan Rachel Wood. No one listened

Marilyn Manson bragged about abusing Evan Rachel Wood. No one listened

Feb. 2, 2021, 4:31 AM EST

By Jill Filipovic, author of "OK Boomer, Let's Talk: How My Generation Got Left Behind"

The actor Evan Rachel Wood has, again, spoken out publicly about surviving an abusive relationship. And this time, she's naming names: The man she says groomed and abused her is washed-up Goth-rock dork Brian Warner, who prefers to be known as Marilyn Manson. Multiple other women have now spoken out, too, detailing horrifying allegations of abuse.

snip...

That Manson was reported to be Wood's abuser is one the worst-kept secrets in the music industry. Wood has repeatedly opened up about the abuse she has suffered in her life, and while she didn't name anyone, it didn't take Olivia Benson-level investigative skills to hypothesize whom she might be talking about. Wood testified before the California Senate that the man who abused her began grooming her when she was just 18. She said he physically abused her, deprived her of sleep, starved her and stalked her when she tried to leave him, calling her incessantly, she said.

snip...

For more than a decade, he has been upfront about his misogyny and abusive behavior. In a 2009 interview with Spin magazine, conducted shortly after his breakup with Wood, Manson said he called Wood 158 times while self-mutilating and then blamed her for it. "I wanted to show her the pain she put me through," Manson said. "It was like, 'I want you to physically see what you've done.'"

That lines up with Wood's account of an abusive man who refused to let her leave. And even if it didn't, Manson was telling on himself: Self-harming and then blaming someone else is a classically manipulative behavior.

But Manson didn't stop there. He told the Spin magazine writer — in an interview that one imagines he hoped Wood would read — that he fantasized about murdering her. "The song 'I Want to Kill You Like They Do in the Movies' is about my fantasies," Manson said. "I have fantasies every day about smashing her skull in with a sledgehammer."

Quick guide: COVID-19 vaccines in use and how they work

Quick guide: COVID-19 vaccines in use and how they work
By Nicoletta Lanese - Staff Writer 18 hours ago

Editor's note: This article was last updated at 9:00am on Feb. 2. The original article was posted on Jan. 11.

snip...

Pfizer-BioNTech
The vaccine developed by Pfizer and German biotechnology company BioNTech is 95% effective at preventing COVID-19, a large study found. The vaccine is administered in two doses, given three weeks apart, and it must be stored at minus 94 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 70 degrees Celsius). On Dec. 11, 2020, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine became the first COVID-19 vaccine to be authorized for emergency use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

snip...

Moderna
The vaccine developed by U.S. biotech company Moderna and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) also uses mRNA as its base and is estimated to be 94.5% effective at preventing COVID-19. Like the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, it's delivered in two doses, but the doses are given four weeks apart, rather than three. Another difference is that the Moderna vaccine can be stored at at minus 4 F (minus 20 C), rather than requiring deep-freezing like the Pfizer shots.

snip...

Oxford-AstraZeneca
The vaccine developed by Oxford University and pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca is estimated to be about 70% effective at preventing COVID-19 — that said, in clinical trials, adjusting the dose seemed to boost this efficacy. In people given two full-size doses, spaced 28 days apart, the vaccine was about 62% effective; in those given a half-dose followed by a full dose, the vaccine was 90% effective, according to early analyses. However, clinical trial participants who got half-doses did so by mistake, and some scientists have questioned whether those early results are representative.

About littlemissmartypants

I read voraciously and fast with high comprehension. I love to learn and share. But I will never, ever post anything in LBN again because someone always seems to find fault with my posts. I've had too many locked for stupid reasons to ever take LBN seriously ever again. I now just trash it. Which is a shame since there are individuals who are regular posters there that I love. I just send all not truly LBN and LBN dupes to the Trash from now on. No need to even bother any hosts with those anymore. Using Ignore and Trash are proving to be much easier and better options for me than trying to engage and attempt to make LBN a better place. I'm also getting tired of this place looking like the Trump Underground. Trashing every iteration of the surname and all of the clever nicknames people have created make it virtually impossible not to see posts about the psychopath that is the Republican party's preferred presidential candidate. Oh, well. GOTV!
