Solidarity and humor in the coronavirus crisis (15 photos with text)

From friendly gestures or encouragement to helping others in need, the COVID-19 pandemic has shown us all how humanity can come together in times of crisis. This is how people around the world are showing solidarity.

Examples:

Bear hunt
With schools and kindergartens closed for weeks, kids can get bored. To keep them amused, thousands of Belgians and Dutch have put cute teddy bears in their windows — it's bear-spotting time! Many bears are registered on interactive maps so parents can plan their family outings along the route that has the most teddy bears.

Brightening everyday life

Turkey has taken a different tack, imposing a curfew for people older than 65 or chronically ill — for their own protection. In the city of Mersin, 25-year-old Zulkif Cengiz has been playing a few tunes to pass the time for elderly people staying at home. In other countries, people sing in front of nursing homes, where residents are not allowed to have visitors to avoid infection.

US facing hunger crisis as demand for food banks soars

'A perfect storm': US facing hunger crisis as demand for food banks soars
Food banks are reporting unprecedented demand across the US as millions lose jobs, investigation shows

(snips)
An unprecedented number of Americans have resorted to food banks for emergency supplies since the coronavirus pandemic triggered widespread layoffs.

The demand for food aid has increased as much as eightfold in some areas, according to an investigation by the Guardian, which gives a nationwide snapshot of the hunger crisis facing the US as millions become unemployed.

About one in three people seeking groceries at not-for-profit pantries last month have never previously needed emergency food aid, according to interviews with a dozen providers across the country.

The national guard has been deployed to help food banks cope with rising demand in cities including Cleveland, Phoenix and St Louis amid growing concerns that supplies may run low as the crisis evolves. Overstretched food pantries are switching to drive-thrus and home deliveries to minimize the spread of Covid-19 as almost 300 million Americans are urged to stay at home.

Quick Guide:
How you can help food banks in the Covid-19 pandemic

Even before the Covid-19 pandemic, more than 40 million Americans relied on food banks to get enough to eat. Now, the demand for emergency food aid is growing exponentially as millions of people lose their jobs.

As this demand grows, food banks are receiving far fewer donations from retailers as people are buying in bulk, so stocks are low. This means food banks must buy more supplies to make sure they have enough to feed every hungry American asking for help.

Donate money or supplies

The Feeding America network of 200 food banks secures and distributes 4.3 billion meals each year through 60,000 food pantries and meal programs. They help vulnerable communities including the elderly and disabled, as well as providing free nutritional lunches for school children from low-income families.

If you want to help, find your local food bank, and go to their website to donate. You can also donate to Feeding America’s Covid-19 response fund.

Volunteers

Food banks rely on volunteers, and Feeding America and food pantries across the US urgently need help as most regular volunteers are senior citizens who are particularly vulnerable to Covid-19. If you are interested in becoming a new volunteer, use Feeding America’s tool to find your local food bank or pantry but please get in touch with them first before showing up. Remember, if you’re worried about your own health or the risk to a family member, “stay home” is the advice.

Social media

Feeding America also says you can help in small ways like following your local food bank on social media and sharing what they are doing online, or by becoming an advocate for the fight to end hunger in America.

Contributions like this are one of the few ways those of us who are forced to remain isolated can help our fellow-man during this crisis. Many other charities will be in despirate need as well such as homeless shelters, Planned Parenthood and the Red Cross.

Interesting reference page on Wikipedia on this topic: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prevalence_of_tobacco_use#United_States

Being a former smoker and being exposed to years of industrial pollutants increases our risks of serious consequences should we contract this disease. Not being a hypocrite here, as I'm a prime example.

Rethuged: What happens when a city's hospital closes 'without warning' during a pandemic

What happens when a city's hospital closes 'without warning' during a pandemic
Group of doctors and nurses in Kansas city of Wellington are improvising ways to battle the coming pandemic with little guidance and not much equipment

Link: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/mar/31/what-happens-when-a-citys-hospital-closes-without-warning-during-a-pandemic

Snips:
Two weeks ago, as the virus crept closer and people in other parts of the state started dying, the owners of the city’s only hospital thought it a good time to close down with just a few hours’ notice on the grounds the facility was losing money.

“We lost our hospital abruptly and without warning,” said Dr Lacie Gregory, a family practitioner in Wellington. “Even as the healthcare providers here in town, we did not hear that it was closing until it was a done deal. We received a text message from the director of nursing saying as of now there’s no hospital. So really, really unfortunate timing.”

That has left Gregory and a small group of other doctors and nurse practitioners at the city’s Family Care Center at the forefront of preparing for the coming pandemic with little guidance and not much equipment.

The physicians had assumed the 63-bed Sumner community hospital’s emergency department would deal with people contracting coronavirus while they went on treating more routine conditions of cuts, broken bones and high blood pressure, and that the two would remain safely at a distance. But now the Family Care Center is the first line of defence for the city of 8,000 people.

It would appear the hospital's owners simply decided to cut and run before the hard impacts of COVID-19 hit, during which they would have struggled to stay open without substantial state or federal help. Now, the load will be thrown entirely onto a small community clinic and many more people will die.

This folks, is capitalism's beloved version of private-run healthcare at its worst. Also be sure to read the comments from officials in an adjoining country to raise your fury level to 10.

How Fox News Network cheats to stay in business:

This is the first two parts of a 23 part Twitter thread by Angelo Carusone (@GoAngelo) that reveals how Fox News cheats cable subscribers to stay in business. See thread reader link below for the rest......

1/ I want to share a bit about Fox News, advertisers, revenue and accountability. Let me first start by saying that, Fox News is actually suffering quite severely on the advertiser front. (The next chart will illustrate just how badly)...
2/ This is the number of paid ads on Tucker's show. As you can see this chart shows the average number of *paid* commercials per show. It dropped off quite severely in 2019. It *still* hasn't recovered. So what's this mean in terms of dollars?

Thread Reader Link: https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1244819790650322944.html

A few of the best parts:
Well, surprise surprise, Fox News cheats. And we all basically subsidize Fox News as a result of that cheating. Fox News could have $0 in advertising revenue and still have a 90% profit margin. That should be surprising given that they are a commercial media outlet. But this is in large part why Fox seems impervious to some ad pressure. They have a big cushion.
-------
Fox News is notoriously recognized as the most aggressive negotiator. And it's not just that they are good at it. They lie and cheat. They tell Fox News viewers that their cable company is trying to silence Fox News, they enlist their hosts to spread that misinformation too. The effect? News & info channels’ subscriber fees are normally small. MSNBC gets ~$0.33, CNN gets between $0.70-0.90 per month (and includes CNN and CNN Headline News). In contrast, Fox News charges near or over $2 a month. This is wildly out of step with industry averages.

Fox News' fees are artificially inflated. Fox would not be able to sustain itself in its current incarnation w/out bullying cable providers into overpaying. It's time the 90M cable customers pushback way Fox has pushed all these years. We need a Fox News fee correction.

Lawsuits - Fox News spent months not only downplaying coronavirus, but actively misinforming their audience about it - and also encouraging them to do dangerous things (like take trips). While Fox News was lying, the Murdochs were canceling gatherings and social distancing. Lawsuits - It isn't a question. There will be lawsuits. And the thing is, when that happens, my sense is that discovery will reveal that they were intentionally misinforming their audience and that they were coordinating with Trump admin to align messaging.
