How Lincoln's disdain for demagogues pricks Trump's Fourth of July pomposity
If nothing else, the president’s speech on the Mall on Thursday will show how far we have fallen since Lincoln

On 4 July, while Trump mugs on the Mall, the marble Lincoln will maintain a dignified silence. Many have wondered what Lincoln might say if confronted by the people and events of their time. In 1914, at the beginning of the first world war, the poet Vachel Lindsay, in Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight, portrayed a ghostly Lincoln deploring the conflagration. But we do not have to wonder what Lincoln might say about demagogic exploitation of the Fourth of July or hypocritical displays about the ideals of the Declaration of Independence. His statements on the subject were voluminous, plain and scathing.

Here is a small sample:

To a friend, 15 August 1855:

On the question of liberty, as a principle, we are not what we have been. When we were the political slaves of King George, and wanted to be free, we called the maxim that ‘all men are created equal,’ a self-evident truth; but now when we have grown fat, and have lost all dread of being slaves ourselves, we have become so greedy to be masters that we call the same maxim ‘a self-evident lie.’ The Fourth of July has not quite dwindled away; it is still a great day – for burning fire-crackers!!!
.

and....

More than the expropriation of Independence Day to justify slavery agitated Lincoln. A week later, on 24 August, he wrote his close friend Joshua Speed to complain about the rising anti-immigrant, nativist and super-patriotic Know Nothing party as a duplicitous mockery of the Declaration of Independence:

As a nation, we began by declaring that ‘all men are created equal.’ We now practically read it ‘all men are created equal, except negroes.’ When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read ‘all men are created equal, except negroes, and foreigners, and Catholics.’ When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretense of loving liberty – to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocrisy.

This is exactly what Republicans want to happen - divide and conquer, but...

it's not your doing at all. So-called conservatives did it to us and they must own the eventual blowback.

Their intention since Nixon has been to build a tightly closed bubble of right-wing thinkers and supporters, all thoroughly brainwashed by Rush and Rupert. No speaking or exchanging thoughts outside the bubble and everyone outside is the enemy. That's exactly how those I know treat me, as if I'm an alien. Most are articulate and well-versed in the dogma, but they are also aloof and arrogant although quite ignorant of the world around them.

After observing that process for around 50 years, it's my firm conviction that their bubble will eventually collapse from the shear weight of their bullshit, lies, and propensity for criminality. We're seeing cracks in it already.

But alas, it has quite a ways to go yet - mainly because they have access to insane amounts of money....

Thanks for sharing!.......

Regarding that horrific photo showing refugee deaths near Brownsville...

News reports said they had tried to gain legal entry at a border crossing but the waiting time was unbearable, particularly carrying a child. I recall a claim that border authorities are only allowing three applications per day, with hundreds in-waiting.

The photo is going viral around the world and it has Trump's name all over it. Caring citizens are screaming for change but offer few long-term solutions. This is not by any means a new problem and it's one that is killing people, damaging families and thousands of people's health and costing both the U.S. and Mexican governments billions of dollars each year.

One would think that two civilized nations could design a system with several safe UN- or EU-type neutral buffer zones somewhere in Mexico with facilities of sufficient means so that no one starves or dies and families would not be separated, and that cases could be quickly prioritized owing to need and health. Perhaps we need Canada or others to intervene as a moderator. Something like this could also be cost effective compared to the mess we have now and fewer people would suffer.

One huge fundamental problem I'm seeing is that once an individual crosses that thin red border line, their entire life, legal status and rights instantly change. It's a move that's difficult to reverse because they are then on U.S. soil and totally at the mercy of U.S. laws and our DHS. They may already be in trouble with Mexican authorities as illegals. It is horrifying that these folks risk traversing the entire length of Mexico with all the associated dangers and then be treated like animals at our border.

Most of these travelers have no means to take a safe break and seek legal consultation prior to making a potentially dangerous move. By having a properly operated international neutral zone, none of that should occur. I'm probably also a dreamer and very naive but it's OK because that's how workable ideas evolve.

I do realize any such scheme would be fraught with complexities and risks but might work with proper planning, financial support and international assistance. I also realize the Trump administration does not have that sort of moral fiber, and that progressive ideas of this nature are contrary to their archaic political philosophy.

The shear volume of refugee and immigrant inflow obviously has practical limits but in concert with Mexico we should provide humane temporary safety and shelter so that healthy and less needy excess people can be humanely turned back and returned home. This bad situation will only get worse with increasing effects of climate change and the proliferation of barbaric right-wing and despotic regimes to the south.

The entire world must quickly become better prepared for mass movement of refugees and desperate immigrants. Unfortunately, most governments seem to be moving in the opposite direction.

Just wanted to throw some thoughts out for discussion because we need less rage and more ideas that might lead to practical solutions.

Blast away!......

Try watching a few of these very creative humorous animations from France...

I suffer from depression every day, and little things like this break through the gloom on many a day - along with music, our local birds and some hobbies.

We're littering space just like we've littered the oceans.

What could possibly go wrong when space is beginning to look like a junkyard and Walmart parking lot combined with a demolition derby on Saturday night?

See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_debris

(snips)

As of 5 July 2016, the United States Strategic Command tracked a total of 17,852 artificial objects in orbit above the Earth, including 1,419 operational satellites. However, these are just objects large enough to be tracked. As of January 2019, more than 128 million bits of debris smaller than 1 cm (0.4 in), about 900,000 pieces of debris 1–10 cm, and around 34,000 of pieces larger than 10 cm were estimated to be in orbit around the Earth. Collisions with debris have become a hazard to spacecraft; they cause damage akin to sandblasting, especially to solar panels and optics like telescopes or star trackers that cannot be covered with a ballistic Whipple shield (unless it is transparent).

Below 2,000 km (1,200 mi) Earth-altitude, pieces of debris are denser than meteoroids; most are dust from solid rocket motors, surface erosion debris like paint flakes, and frozen coolant from RORSAT (nuclear-powered satellites). For comparison, the International Space Station orbits in the 300–400 kilometres (190–250 mi) range, and the 2009 satellite collision and 2007 antisat test occurred at 800 to 900 kilometres (500 to 560 mi) altitude. The ISS has Whipple shielding; however, known debris with a collision chance over 1/10,000 are avoided by maneuvering the station.

The Kessler syndrome, a runaway chain reaction of collisions exponentially increasing the amount of debris, has been hypothesized to ensue beyond a critical density. This could affect useful polar-orbiting bands, increases the cost of protection for spacecraft missions and could destroy live satellites.

Eventually, many of these recent satellites will become just debris.

No way in hell tRump wrote that. His shadow writers need to be exposed.

I see a dark room in the White House basement full of right-wing scumbags on computers feeding him propaganda for approval, then he just hits "send". It's conceivable that Miller or others approve and send them without tRump's input or actions. He's too busy watching Faux TeeVee and plotting golf cheats.

It's easy to tell the ones he writes or has edited - they're incoherent and filled with spelling, grammar and structural errors.

These actions could backfire spectacularly.

The big problems with hacking wars are that retaliation can come at any time in the future, it's totally unpredictable as to when it may happen and the potential targets are endless. It could be against anything from banking to healthcare to industrial or military systems to water and sewer systems to your smart appliances, and many more (anything that's "connected" ).

Results could vary from minor annoyances to national emergencies (REAL ones).

Trump and his cohorts do not care about consequences affecting everyday citizens. They will try to blame a kid on a computer in his bedroom in Nigeria rather than one of their favored state actors.

Everything is going just as planned...

towards our Nation being a 100% rental society. Homes, farms, business properties, public lands, natural resources, and transportation will slowly be bought up or majority controlled by global investment firms, sovereign wealth funds and independent billionaires. They make offers no one can refuse and they're doing this around the globe.

Let's all take a moment every day and remind ourselves that almost every purchase of goods and services we execute during our lives has an element of profit that can be used to further concentrate the world's wealth in fewer and fewer hands. That's the way our systems of trade, banking, investment, resource control and asset management is now designed to work.

Part of those profits are also use to buy elections and favors from our public servants. It's a cheap investment for them that pays enormous returns. That's how we got to the current total seizure of the U.S. Government in the Senate.

We also need to frequently ask ourselves why interest rates on savings have been practically zero for many years, and simultaneously got sold on placing most of our retirement funds in stock market instruments such as IRAs.

And, it all happened while we were watching with eyes wide open watching media they own......

Dream on.

First, it's extremely unlikely any DU member would try something that foolish. These are cool heads here that don't particularly crave prison time. We're law-abiding citizens, not hackers.

Second, you can bet the farm that any such video streams that might exist are protected with the strongest security that exists on the planet. That is, the best the government has to offer to protect the interests of.....you know who.

You might try calling the Russian Embassy to see if they have any guidance for your project......

In the 80s, Reagan Republicans must have thought globalization of our corporations.....

would give us permanent, total hegemony over the world. It did temporarily to a degree, but globalization also eventually provides work-arounds against any power's efforts toward dominance.

In fact, efforts toward dominance simply encourage other nations to step in with competition. We've seen that with aircraft, communications and basic foods. Some industries are slower to come around such as oil exploration services/components, but eventually will.

If dollar reserve currency dominance ever collapses, we're screwed.
