Iowa officials on Monday certified the results showing state Sen. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R) defeating former state Sen. Rita Hart (D) by just six votes in the race for Iowa’s open 2nd Congressional District.
Miller-Meeks will succeed seven-term Rep. David Loebsack (D-Iowa), who announced his retirement last year. She previously lost to him in the 2008, 2010 and 2014 general elections, but with Loebsack's retirement, the district was considered a swing district.
Miller-Meeks was elected to the state Senate in 2018. Her term was set to end in 2023.
Polling showed the 2nd District as one of the most competitive races in the state, with Hart leading 49 percent to 43 percent in an October poll but Miller-Meeks leading 48 percent to 44 percent in an August survey.

Christy Smith concedes to Mike Garcia in tight CA-25 race

For weeks the CA-25 congressional race looked like anyone’s game. Democratic candidate Christy Smith and Republican incumbent Rep. Mike Garcia took turns in the lead, separated by a hair of a margin.
After days of trailing Garcia, Smith conceded the race to the current officer holder Monday evening, marking another GOP win in the state. Garcia maintained a slim lead over Smith by 333 votes as of Monday evening, according to the Los Angeles and Ventura county registrars’ office.
Garcia had an early lead in the district, but Smith took a 1,287-vote lead on Nov. 9.
“Thank you for all your kindness, patience and support,” Smith tweeted that night. “My team and I appreciate you! We will continue to honor the process as officials do their important work.”

Their side would never concede a scant 333 vote loss. It should have been challenged.
Former New York City Mayor David Dinkins Dies at 93

David Dinkins, New York City’s first and only Black mayor, has died at 93.
Two senior NYPD officials confirmed to NBC New York that Dinkins' health aide found him unresponsive in his Lenox Hill apartment Monday night, having apparently died of natural causes. The former mayor died a little more than a month after his wife, Joyce Dinkins, passed away.
Born in Trenton, New Jersey, Dinkins briefly practicing law in New York City before he began his career in politics as a district leader and was elected a Harlem state Assemblyman in 1966. He went on to serve as President of the Board of Elections and City Clerk before winning election as Manhattan Borough President in 1985.
Dinkins, who also served in the Marines in Korea, ran for mayor in 1989 and defeated Mayor Edward I. Koch and he went on to defeat Rudy Giuliani by the narrowest electoral margin in New York City history: 47,000 votes.

New York GOP congresswoman-elect reveals interest in forming House anti-socialist 'Squad'
Newly elected House GOP members could form an "anti-socialist squad" to counter the ideas of far-left Democrats, Rep.-elect Nicole Malliotakis, R-N.Y., told "Fox & Friends" Friday.
“I can tell you here in NYC, and I assume in cities across America, people were really fed up with the direction the Democrats were trying to take us,” said Malliotakis, who will represent New York's 11th District, which covers Staten Island and parts of South Brooklyn.
Malliotakis added that political figures like New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had moved the city “so much to the left.”
“And you have individuals like my opponent [Democratic Rep. Max Rose], who had rallied with the 'Defund the police' movement and really had just gone along with the gang," she said, "and people want to see a two-party system, they want to see checks and balances, and I will be the only Republican representing our city in Washington and it is a much-needed voice and perspective.”

Biden names former Alito clerk to top White House job

Joe Biden on Tuesday added a slew of top staffers to his White House team with sterling Democratic credentials. But one of his appointments has a line on her resume that would also make Republicans proud: Onetime clerk to Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito.
Dana Remus, who most recently served as general counsel to the Biden campaign, will become counsel to the president in the new administration. Before joining the campaign, Remus worked as the General Counsel of the Obama Foundation, and as the Deputy Assistant to the President and Deputy Counsel for Ethics during the Obama administration.
A Biden transition official described Remus as “a distinguished attorney with years of experience serving as counsel to Democratic leaders” who is “fully committed to helping execute President-elect Biden’s bold agenda for our country."
But it’s Remus’ experience clerking for Alito in 2008 that could prove especially valuable to the Biden administration as it gears up for repeated clashes with the Court’s 6 to 3 conservative majority in the years ahead.

House Democrats ask to delay Supreme Court arguments over Mueller docs

(CNN)The Democratic-led House Judiciary Committee asked the Supreme Court on Tuesday to postpone oral arguments in an upcoming case concerning grand jury material redacted from former special counsel Robert Mueller's report.
The lawyers argued that now that Joe Biden has been elected president and a new Congress will begin in early January, a "newly constituted" committee will determine whether it wishes to continue to pursue the documents.
If the court grants the request, it would put off a major separation of powers fight, testing the ability of the Justice Department to control grand jury information from a historic, deeply political investigation it conducted that could also aid congressional investigations.
In February, the Supreme Court granted the Trump administration's request to take up the case, blocking the release of the documents for now.

Anti-Colin Kaepernick candidate Burgess Owens wins election to Congress in Utah

A Black conservative former NFL player who had been harshly critical of player protests in the league has won his bid for Congress in central Utah after making racial issues part of his election effort to win white voters.
Burgess Owens, a Republican who played safety for the New York Jets in the 1970s, beat Rep. Ben McAdams, the white Democratic incumbent who first was elected in Utah’s 4th Congressional District in 2018.
The ballot count took two weeks after Election Day but ended up like this, as of Monday: 47.5% for Owens and 46.9% for McAdams, a difference of 2,139 votes out of more than 372,000 votes cast.
McAdams conceded the election Monday and called Owens to congratulate him. “He expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve #UT04 and his commitment to a smooth transition,” Owens wrote in a post on Twitter. “My sincere thanks to him for both. Thank you my fellow Utahns, I am committed to have an open ear to serve you. Thank you for the opportunity.”

Rep. Max Rose concedes to GOP challenger Nicole Malliotakis in NYC congressional upset

Rep. Max Rose conceded his first race for reelection to Republican challenger Nicole Malliotakis on Thursday, putting New York City’s only congressional battleground district back under GOP control.
Malliotakis declared victory on election night last week, but Rose initially refused to back down, citing thousands of outstanding mail-in ballots cast in the race for the 11th congressional district, which covers all of Staten Island and a sliver of Southern Brooklyn.
As ballots continued to be tallied Thursday afternoon, though, Rose acknowledged he no longer had a path to victory.
“I have called to congratulate Congresswoman-elect Malliotakis on her win and concede the race," Rose said in a statement. “Representing this district has been the honor of my life ... I love Staten Island and Brooklyn."

Republican Dan Sullivan wins reelection in US Senate race in Alaska

(CNN)Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan will win reelection in Alaska, CNN projected Wednesday, defeating independent Al Gross, who was running with the backing of national Democrats.
Sullivan joins the growing ranks of Republican incumbents who have successfully defended seats that Democrats targeted this year in their efforts to win the Senate majority. Democrats are now looking to what is expected to be two Georgia runoff races in January as their only remaining shot at winning a majority in the chamber.
Sullivan, first elected in 2014, highlighted his record in the Senate to argue that he has delivered for Alaskans and attempted to portray Gross as a far-left liberal.
Gross, in contrast, attacked Sullivan's record in Washington and emphasized his own medical background as a doctor while pushing a message that he would work to improve health care affordability and access amid the coronavirus crisis.
