NY unemployment experts, please help, benefits expiring soon!

I live in NYC, and filed for NY unemployment benefits in March, and was accepted. It says I have 16 "Effective Days Remaining." From what I understand, in NY there are 4 effective days each week, so that should last until roughly 4 more weeks.

So my question is, is that it? It just ends? Any chance of an extension during the pandemic? Would it be automatic or would I have to do anything? Thanks in advance everyone.

New York Gov. Cuomo warns NYC restaurants may have to close again in the fall

New York City restaurants that have been staying afloat with outdoor patios and takeout service this summer may be forced to close when it turns cold this fall as local officials struggle to enforce the state’s orders to curb the coronavirus, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo warned Wednesday.

Unlike other parts of the state, restaurants and bars in the Big Apple have not been allowed to reopen indoor dining services. Some have been able to operate with expanded outdoor patios that Cuomo has said are safer.

“We have a much, a much bigger problem in New York City today than any of the surrounding suburbs with a lack of compliance,” Cuomo told reporters on a conference call when asked why the state allows indoor dining in other regions and not New York City.

While every region of New York is in the final phase of reopening, New York City has been barred from reopening many indoor activities as Covid-19 spread across the country. Cuomo has recently laid the groundwork for some indoor businesses to return in the coming weeks with limited capacity, including gyms and museums, but has yet to make a decision on restaurants and bars.

AOC symbolically nominates Bernie Sanders in 60-second DNC speech

Source: NBC News

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stressed the importance of broad progressive priorities during a brief speech to the virtual Democratic National Convention Tuesday night that made no mention of the party's nominee.

The New York Democrat, who was given a 60-second slot as part of her role in the symbolic nomination of Sen. Bernie Sanders for president, opened her speech by offering her thanks to a “mass people’s movement working to establish 21st century social, economic, and human rights, including guaranteed health care, higher education, living wages, and labor rights for all people in the United States.”

She ended by formally seconding the nomination of Sanders, I-Vt., to be her party's presidential nominee, a procedural move. Joe Biden officially claimed the party's nomination moments later.

“In a time when millions of people in the United States are looking for deep systemic solutions to our crises of mass evictions, unemployment, and lack of health care, and espíritu del pueblo and out of a love for all people, I hereby second the nomination of Senator Bernard Sanders of Vermont for president of the United States of America,” she said.

CNN Poll: Biden and Trump matchup tightens as enthusiasm hits new high

Source: CNN

(CNN)Joe Biden's lead over Donald Trump among registered voters has significantly narrowed since June, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS, even as the former vice president maintains an advantage over the President on several top issues and his choice of California Sen. Kamala Harris as a running mate earns largely positive reviews.

And on the eve of the party conventions, a majority of voters (53%) are "extremely enthusiastic" about voting in this year's election, a new high in CNN polling in presidential election cycles back to 2003.

Overall, 50% of registered voters back the Biden-Harris ticket, while 46% say they support Trump and Pence, right at the poll's margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points. Among the 72% of voters who say they are either extremely or very enthusiastic about voting this fall, Biden's advantage over Trump widens to 53% to 46%. It is narrower, however, among those voters who live in the states that will have the most impact on the electoral college this fall.

Across 15 battleground states, the survey finds Biden has the backing of 49% of registered voters, while Trump lands at 48%.

An ABC poll posted in an earlier thread had Biden up by 11. Since both polls are highly-rated, I suspect the actual percentage is somewhere in the middle.

Joe Biden offers condolences to Donald Trump after his brother Robert Trump's death

Source: CNN

CNN) Former Vice President Joe Biden offered condolences Sunday morning to Donald Trump after the President's younger brother Robert Trump died at age 71.

"Mr. President, Jill and I are sad to learn of your younger brother Robert's passing," Biden said on Twitter. "I know the tremendous pain of losing a loved one — and I know how important family is in moments like these. I hope you know that our prayers are with you all."

Robert Trump died Saturday at a New York hospital, Donald Trump announced in a statement.

"It is with heavy heart I share that my wonderful brother, Robert, peacefully passed away tonight. He was not just my brother, he was my best friend. He will be greatly missed, but we will meet again. His memory will live on in my heart forever. Robert, I love you. Rest in peace," the President said.

Virginia mayor urged to resign after saying Biden picked 'Aunt Jemima as his VP'

Source: NBC News

A Virginia mayor is facing calls for his resignation over a Facebook post in which he said that Joe Biden "just announced Aunt Jemima" as his running mate.

Luray Mayor Barry Presgraves posted the comment last weekend on his Facebook page. The comment was condemned by members of the Luray Town Council and other residents before he took it down that same weekend.

Luray is a town of less than 5,000 people, the majority of them white, according to the most recent census data. Four percent of the population is Black. The town is about 90 miles west of Washington, D.C.

A number of Black women were on Biden’s running mate short list, including Florida Rep. Val Demings; California Rep. Karen Bass, who leads the Congressional Black Caucus; Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms; and Susan Rice, the former national security adviser to President Barack Obama.

QAnon supporter, who made racist videos, calls Pelosi a 'b****' in angry acceptance speech after win

Source: Independent

A GOP candidate and far-right QAnon conspiracy theorist branded Nancy Pelosi a “b***h” in her victory speech after winning the Republican nomination for Georgia.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, a businesswoman who has expressed racist views in videos shared online, beat neurosurgeon, John Cowan, in the 14th congressional district race, securing 57 per cent of the vote.

Addressing her supporters in a victory speech, later posted on social media, Ms Green criticised the Democrat House speaker Ms Pelosi, whom she also labelled “anti-America”.

“I just wanna say to Nancy Pelosi. She’s a hypocrite,” Ms Greene can be heard saying in the video. “She’s anti-American. And we’re going to kick that b***h out of Congress,” she added to loud applause.

Rep. Ilhan Omar Defeats Antone Melton-Meaux, 3 Other Challengers In Primary Election

Source: CBS Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Incumbent Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has won Minnesota’s 5th District Primary Tuesday evening.

The race was hotly contested, as Omar faced four challengers from her own party, including heavily-funded Antone Melton-Meaux. His campaign spokesman told WCCO he conceded at 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Tuesday’s election was also a test of Minnesota’s absentee-voting system, with unprecedented numbers voting by mail because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Election results were delayed because of the influx of absentee ballots which were sent in.

Omar was first elected to the seat in 2018, becoming the first Somali American and one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress. She won that crowded primary field by more than 18 percentage points, and has since made her mark as a progressive and outspoken critic of President Donald Trump. She was endorsed by the DFL and Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, a QAnon Supporter, Wins House Primary in Georgia

Source: NY Times

Conspiracy theorists won a major victory on Tuesday as a Republican supporter of the convoluted pro-Trump movement QAnon triumphed in her House primary runoff election in Georgia, all but ensuring that she will represent a deep-red district in Congress.

The ascension of Marjorie Taylor Greene, who embraces a conspiracy theory that the F.B.I. has labeled a potential domestic terrorism threat, came as six states held primary and runoff elections on Tuesday.

In Georgia, Ms. Greene defeated John Cowan, a neurosurgeon who is no less conservative or pro-Trump, according to The Associated Press, holding a lead of more than 15 percentage points around 10 p.m. Eastern. The result is likely to unsettle mainstream Republicans, who have sought to publicly distance themselves from QAnon supporters running for congressional office this cycle even as they quietly support some of them.

Now, with Georgia’s 14th Congressional District, one of the most Republican in the country, likely to vote red in November, Ms. Greene is all but assured of getting the chance to put into action her talk of rooting out an imagined deep-state cabal of pedophile Satanists who are trying to take down President Trump.
