Navy site that leaked fuel into water system a 'time bomb' that must be emptied, Hawaii official say

Source: Washington Post

The fuel storage facility at the heart of the water contamination fiasco at Pearl Harbor is a “ticking time bomb” that the U.S. military is unable to manage, David Day, Hawaii’s deputy attorney general, said Monday, upholding a state emergency order compelling the Navy to empty massive storage tanks and make needed repairs.

A November leak of 14,000 gallons of jet fuel at the long-troubled Red Hill underground fuel-storage facility contaminated a Navy-operated well, sickening scores of people and driving about 3,500 military families from their homes.

The Hawaii Department of Health on Dec. 6 ordered the Navy to suspend operations at Red Hill, which officials have described as the most important fuel depot in the Pacific. The Navy fought the order, saying in testimony last week that its decision to pause operations, rush water-filtration systems to the island and investigate the leak was an adequate response.

To shut it down presents a logistical problem. This is a know issue it appears for decades.
How bad will the "Logistical problem" be if the tanks fail and the island's aquifer is polluted?
Time to shut it down.

I want to thank the GOP

I want to thank the GOP for working tirelessly to change this country for the worse.
I want to thank the GOP for turning what was once largely reasonably civil discourse into outright hate for people with another view.
I want to thank the GOP, who since Reagan, have wielded lies and racism to divide a country that may have been on its way to becoming a better place for all people.
I want to thank the GOP for tearing down societal norms of helping people in need even if they are not of your party or religion.
I want to thank the GOP for telling women that they are earthen vessels for man’s enjoyment.
I want to thank the GOP for destroying the idea of a just and civil society.
I want to thank the GOP for normalizing the need to carry guns everywhere and be able to use them with little provocation.
I want to thank the GOP for weaponizing Christianity. For turning it into a massive for-profit enterprise used to loot the lower middle classes.
I want to thank the GOP for turning the Catholic Church into a cudgel to beat down people of their own faith who don’t toe the most extreme line.
I want to thank the GOP for decades of relentless bashing of teachers as fodder to break unions.
I want to thank the GOP for railing against educated elites while sending their own children to upper class schools and on to Ivy league colleges which they bash at every turn.
I want to thank the GOP for pushing for individual liberty while recklessly allowing those freedom lovers they created to willfully endanger the rest of the public at large.
I want to thank the GOP for normalizing death threats by to public officials no matter how small their role is in society. Yes, even voluntary board positions for schools showing children how to get their way through temper tantrums and bullying.
I want to thank the GOP for normalizing election voter suppression.
I want to thank the GOP for showing we Libs just how ignorant and easily fooled their base really is.
I want to thank the GOP for showing everyone what cancel culture really is by working to ban books of all sorts.
I want to thank the GOP for making my decision to live permanently in a different country an easy choice.

The Navy will contest an emergency order issued by the Hawaii Department of Health to suspend operations at a fuel site tied to contaminated tap water at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, officials said Tuesday.

The Navy requested a continuance of the order and is negotiating terms with state health officials, Department of Health spokesperson Katie Arita-Chang said.

The order to halt operations at the Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility was issued Monday amid a tainted water crisis that has forced more than 700 people from their homes and sickened families.

Who had pumice clogging harbours

On their 2021 Bingo Cards...

Vast amounts of pumice pebbles, spewed out months ago by an undersea volcano, have clogged dozens of ports and damaged fishing boats along Japan’s southernmost coastlines.

Deputy chief cabinet secretary Yoshihiko Isozaki said on Friday that the pumice had so far affected 11 ports on Okinawa and 19 others in the Kagoshima prefecture, on Japan’s southernmost island of Kyushu, and forced the central government to establish a disaster recovery task force.

CA Recall

The recall is over. The GOP got handed a loss as big as the first election for Newsom.
Fifteen years the GOP haven't had a statewide office holder. Right down to State Dog Catcher. Their message is toxic. Yet they refuse to change. Anti-immigrant/minority when 60% of the state is minority? Pushing religious hate. Pushing low taxes while the infrastructure is collapsing. Complaining a bout budgets deficits when the state since Arnold left has been running surpluses?

They are a failed party but refuse to see that they don't have a message of hope or inclusion. I saw a new article crowing that 23 counties want Newsom out. Lassen county has a 30,000 population. 15,000 voter's total. My town has 5 times the population and votes democratic because the GOP message doesn't come close to matching their beliefs.

They will have to change or die off. Looks like they are willing to become total non-entities in CA.

Heading to CA

I'm going to the Bay Area in California for September and a few days into October.
It will be interesting since it has been 2 years since I was there last. Having lived in Munich for the past 6 years I don't think I can really call it home now. It will be a different experience. Between the ravages of Covid, the fires, and the life pressures people living in the area experience it will feel strange.

We are trying to get my daughter packed up so we can have her join us in Munich.
Not looking forward to driving around our area and with the air quality from the fires not sure I want to spend time getting around on my bike. Not to mention the drivers attitudes in the Bay Area versus around Munich. Plus I have a lot of purging of stuff left behind.
I have to find out if I can afford to ship a few things to Munich. Doesn't look cheap.

Fun stuff.

This is how to prevent another 100,000 Covid deaths by December, Fauci says

Source: CNN

(CNN)With nearly 100,000 Americans hospitalized with Covid-19 and infections surging among the unvaccinated population, it's possible another 100,000 people could die from the virus by December, according to a recent University of Washington model.

"What is going on now is both entirely predictable, but entirely preventable," Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told CNN's Jake Tapper Sunday, saying the outcome of the model is possible. "We know we have the wherewithal with vaccines to turn this around."

But will enough listen. Really sad and discouraging.

First water cuts in US West supply to hammer Arizona farmers

Source: Associated Press

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. (AP) — A harvester rumbles through the fields in the early morning light, mowing down rows of corn and chopping up ears, husks and stalks into mulch for feed at a local dairy.

The cows won’t get their salad next year, at least not from this farm. There won’t be enough water to plant the corn crop.

Climate change, drought and high demand are expected to force the first-ever mandatory cuts to a water supply that 40 million people across the American West depend on — the Colorado River. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation’s projection next week will spare cities and tribes but hit Arizona farmers hard.

This year's summer of climate extremes hits wealthier places

Source: Independent UK, via AP

Chickens coming home to roost.....

As the world staggers through another summer of extreme weather, experts are noticing something different: 2021′s onslaught is hitting harder and in places that have been spared global warming’s wrath in the past.

Wealthy countries such as the United States Canada Germany and Belgium are joining poorer and more vulnerable nations on a growing list of extreme weather events that scientists say have some connection to human-caused climate change.

“It is not only a poor country problem, it's now very obviously a rich county problem,” said Debby Guha-Sapir, founder of the international disaster database at the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters at Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium. “They (the rich) are getting whacked.”
