Billionaire's Star Rises as She Takes Bold Stance on Racism in Brazil

Billionaire’s Star Rises as She Takes Bold Stance on Racism in Brazil
Luiza Trajano turned a small family store into a retail giant. Now, a company policy limiting its executive training program to Black applicants is drawing praise, outrage and much soul-searching.

SÃO PAULO, Brazil — It was a casual conversation that led Luiza Trajano, one of Brazil’s wealthiest women, to ponder her country’s racism, to recognize her part in it — and to do something about it.

A few years back, she said, she had heard a young, accomplished Black businesswoman mention that she never attended happy hours with colleagues unless her boss explicitly asked her to join. Years of feeling the rejection that many Black Brazilians experience in predominantly white settings had taught her to seek clear invitations, the woman explained.

Ms. Trajano, who is white, felt a pang of sadness. Then an uncomfortable thought crossed her mind.

“At my birthday parties, there aren’t any Black women,” Ms. Trajano remembered thinking. “That’s structural racism that, in my case, is not born out of rejection, but out of failing to seek them out.”

That moment of introspection for Ms. Trajano, who had turned a small family business into a retail behemoth, helped plant the seeds for a bold corporate affirmative action initiative, which has drawn praise, outrage and plenty of soul searching in Brazil.

Analysts: Son involved in Fayetteville road rage shooting knew his father was planning to shoot

Analysts: Son involved in road rage shooting knew his father was planning to shoot

Video sent to WRAL News on Tuesday shows Nobles' son, Roger Dale Nobles Jr., get out of the truck and argue with Addison before his father fires a shotgun from the truck's driver's seat.

Anthony Waddy, an analyst with SAV Consulting, said that Nobles Jr.'s body language shows that he played a key role in the shooting.

"Where he's actually standing in reference to, what we call in the military, a fatal funnel," he said. "He's clearly out of harm's way."

Waddy said it appears that Nobles Jr. anticipated the shooting and cleared a path for his father to fire shots.
Nobles Jr. got out of the truck to confront Addison, and Nobles Sr. fired a gun from the driver's seat, police said.

Stephen Addison, 32, was riding a motorcycle at about 12:30 p.m. Monday when he was involved in a roadside dispute with Roger Dale Nobles, 51, who allegedly shot and killed Addison, Fayetteville police said in a statement.

Nobles fled after the deadly encounter. He was later arrested on a charge of first-degree murder, police said.

“The preliminary investigation has revealed a driver of a truck was engaged in a disturbance with a driver of a motorcycle resulting in the motorcyclist being shot by the suspect,” police said.

Addison died at a hospital, police said.

Cumberland County District Attorney Billy West told NBC affiliate WRAL in Raleigh he was investigating whether to also charge Nobles, who is white, with hate crimes in the shooting of Addison, a Black man.

someone's illegal pet found roaming about Massachusetts. to be placed in zoo or sanctuary

The MSPCA-Angell’s Community Outreach team received a call Tuesday afternoon about a large cat roaming a Lincoln neighborhood — not unusual.

The large cat, however, turned out to be a serval, a wild feline native to sub-Saharan Africa — which is very unusual.

“It is illegal to own a serval in Massachusetts and, as with other wild animals, their physical and behavioral needs cannot be met when kept as a pet,” said Kara Holmquist, the director of advocacy at the MSPCA-Angell, in a statement. “This results in harm to the animal, and potential danger to people and other animals.”

The MSPCA said it will determine the best possible course of treatment, which may include amputation of the leg.

Unfortunately, Bruno wasn’t wearing any ID tags and wasn’t microchipped, making it difficult to identify his owner, according to the MSPCA.

“This serval is as wild as any found in Africa and the MSPCA will look to place him ultimately with a zoo or sanctuary once his treatment and recovery (are) complete — he is not available for adoption,” according to the statement.

Florida Mail Carrier Stole Greeting Cards for the Cash, parents (her supervisor) turned her in

**note - she stole outgoing mail from the Villages... grannies sending $$ to the grand kids.

– Authorities say that a Florida mail carrier accused of stealing 4,000 or so pieces of mail around the holidays was busted by her own parents, and that she sifted through greeting cards to find cash due to her drug addiction.

----------------------

Farleigh's supervisor informed the postmaster there that she'd recently found the unlawfully opened mail in Farleigh's bedroom, the complaint notes. The reason the supervisor had had access to Farleigh's bedroom in the first place, per the court doc: She's Farleigh's mother, and also a contractor for the USPS.

As is Farleigh's father, who, along with Farleigh's mother, confronted Farleigh about the opened mail and searched her car, where they found more opened mail, the complaint notes, adding that Farleigh's mother then "relieved [Farleigh] of her postal duties and secured the recovered mail."

The complaint notes that, of the approximately 4,000 pieces of mail that Farleigh allegedly stole, "nearly all of the rifled envelopes consisted of outgoing mail that appeared to hold a holiday and/or greeting card." Farleigh admitted to Keith that she'd targeted residents' outgoing mail in her hunt for cash or gift cards, and that her heroin addiction was what spurred her actions.

First comprehensive data in two years show big academic setbacks for California students

California’s K-12 students experienced significant academic setbacks during the 2020-21 school year of mainly remote learning, showing growing achievement gaps, lagging progress in math and English, increased chronic absenteeism and a slight decline in the statewide graduation rate, according to data released Friday by the California Department of Education.

The data provide the most comprehensive picture yet of how California students have fared during the pandemic. It includes standardized test results for students from third to eighth grade and high school juniors, as well as information on attendance, discipline statistics and graduation rates.

The results show that about half of all California students tested did not meet state standards in English language arts and about two-thirds did not meet standards in math. The scores of Black, Latino and economically disadvantaged students were significantly lower, with more than 60% not meeting English standards and about 80% not meeting math standards.

In English language arts, the rate of students not meeting expectations was significantly higher in earlier grades compared with later grades, indicating that younger students may be uniquely struggling with literacy skills. For example, about 60% of third and fourth graders were not meeting standards in English compared to about 40% of 11th graders.

MMA fighter regrets Hitler tattoos.

An MMA fighter was banned from making his pro debut after it was found he has a tattoo of Adolf Hitler

----------------------

Though Rousal has tried to distance himself from that past, it has not sat well with regional promoter Ondrej Novotny, who runs the Czech fight firm Oktagon MMA.

"You can't come to us and look like this," Novotny told Czech publication Idnes in December, days before Rousal was scheduled to fight a Slovak combatant called Nikolas Krivak.

People alerted Novotny to news that Rousal had a portrait of Hitler on his right hand.
Photos of Rousal show that he also has a tattoo of a skull wearing a military cap on his chest, likely a reference to the SS, the Nazi German paramilitary organization.

---------------

"I grew up in the troubled community of people that made this tattoo," he said, according to Idnes. "At the time, I didn't know what to do with life, I was young and this tattoo was stupid.

"Later, I started doing martial arts, which led me to a completely different life and worldview. I have more tattoos that I regret, I gradually re-tattoo them all. I also want to apologize with my statement."

Two people trying to flee a Redondo Beach restaurant without paying their bill struck a manager with their car — and it was all captured on video.

The incident happened Monday afternoon at Ragin Cajun Cafe on Pacific Coast Highway.

Lisa Hodges, who owns the restaurant with her husband, Steve, said the pair sat at an outdoor table and racked up $90 worth of food before asking for some to-go containers and their bill.

But the duo — described as a man and woman in their early to mid-20s — left the table without paying, and were already in their car and starting to drive away by the time the manager noticed.

---------

Security camera footage shows a red sedan accelerating and striking the manager. Hodges said the man was carried about 30 feet on the hood of the car, and fell off only when the driver made a sharp turn as he maneuvered to get on Pacific Coast Highway.

Anti-Vaxxer Bishop Who Believed 'God Doesn't Allow You To Be Infected' Dies Of COVID-19

bishop, known for his staunch anti-vaccination and mask stance, has died of COVID-19 over a month after contracting the virus. His condition had deteriorated after having suffered severe brain damage.

Metropolitan Kosmas of Aetolia and Acarnania breathed his last at a hospital ICU in Western Greece on Monday, reported ekathimerini. The 76-year-old bishop's ICU admission sparked controversy among his critics.

-----------------------------

"God does not allow you to be infected. God does not infect! It is a holy place, the temple is heavenly," he had controversially said at that time.

------------

Kosmas tested positive for the virus on Nov. 18. His health worsened after which he was rushed to a hospital on Dec. 1 though he was against hospitalization, according to Orthodox Times. He was intubated but had to be transferred to Evangelismos Hospital. There, he suffered brain damage, which ruled out any chances of a return to service.

He was extubated a few days ago and as per the medical protocol, he had to undergo a tracheostomy. Despite that, he couldn't be saved
