what other recreational activity involves climbing past dead bodies and a 1 in 10 chance of dying?

It was an unforgettable sight as Ed Dohring made his way to the top of Mount Everest for the first time a few days ago. It was clear and the rising sun cast an orange glow over the world's tallest peak.

But as he stood on the flat part of the 29,000-foot summit, a spot Dohring described as about the size of two Ping-Pong tables, there was another 15 to 20 people jostling for the perfect angle to take a photo.

"I several times was elbowed, pushed aside, shoved," Dohring, a 62-year-old spine surgeon from Arizona, told ABC News in an interview Tuesday at a hotel in Kathmandu, Nepal. "It was scary because, if you lose your footing, potentially you're going to slide off the summit."

“After about 20 minutes I said, 'OK, this is enough.'”

As this year's climbing season draws to a close, overcrowding has been blamed in part for one of Everest's deadliest seasons on record.

Dohring, who scaled the mountain's popular south slope on Nepal's side with a small group of other climbers and a veteran Sherpa guide, said that he passed the bodies of several dead climbers. Among them, was a woman who appeared to have just died and was still clipped to the safety line.

He also saw Sherpas dragging several people down the mountain who had collapsed from exhaustion, were sick or injured.

“You can’t do anything about a person who’s dead and it just -- it shook me inside," Dohring told ABC News. “It was unexpected. I mean, I know people die on Everest. But as you’re moving along the safety line and it’s dark and you’re only seeing a few feet in front of you and all of a sudden that circle of illumination has a dead body in it, it’s very unnerving.”

Georgia D.A. Says He Would Prosecute Women Who Get Abortions

Georgia D.A. Says He Would Prosecute Women Who Get Abortions
“Women need to be made aware,” says Douglas County District Attorney Ryan Leonard. “The only way to be 100% sure you’re not prosecuted under it is not to have an abortion.”

Douglas County District Attorney Ryan Leonard told Law.com’s “Daily Report” on Wednesday that women in Georgia should prepare for the possibility that they could be criminally prosecuted for having an abortion if the law signed by Governor Brian Kemp takes effect as planned in January of next year.

“If you look at it from purely a legal standpoint, if you take the life of another human being, it’s murder,” Leonard told the outlet. Leonard is the first of the state’s district attorneys to declare that interpretation of the law publicly. Others, including the district attorneys for DeKalb and Macon counties, have said they would not seek to prosecute women under the new law.

-----

Whatever legislators intended, Leonard said, is irrelevant at this point; district attorneys like himself are guided by the law as written, and the LIFE Act is written in a way that anticipates the criminal prosecutions of mothers. Leonard pointed to exceptions written into the law, including one clause that exempts from prosecution any pregnant woman who “reasonably believed that an abortion was the only way to prevent a medical emergency.”

“They wouldn’t outline exceptions or exemptions if they didn’t anticipate criminal prosecution,” Leonard said. “Based on my review, the only crime it could fall under is murder. Nothing else criminalizes this conduct.”

Poll: Pro-Choice Support Increases as States Pass Strict Abortion Laws
Americans' support of abortion rights has increased over the past year

According to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Sunday, 58 percent of Americans said, “abortion should be legal in most or all cases.” That is an increase of 8 percent from a similar poll conducted just last year.

The results show a boost from registered Democrats, with 81 percent supporting abortion “in most cases,” while 55 percent of Republicans say the procedure should be illegal “in most cases.”

Eighty percent of Americans support abortion in cases of rape or incest and seem to disagree with the restrictive laws passed this year in Republican-controlled states like Alabama and Georgia.

Eighty-five of Americans support “abortion when the mother’s life is in danger and 59% said abortion should be legal when there is evidence that the baby is physically or mentally impaired,” according to Reuters.

The poll also found that only 9 percent of registered Republicans and 11 percent of registered Democrats want a presidential candidate who would make abortion a primary focus of their campaigns.

Some Republicans think their party has gone too far in Alabama, Missouri and elsewhere

Some Republicans think their party has gone too far in Alabama, Missouri and elsewhere. Democrats see their chance

As Democrats and Republicans look to galvanize their base ahead of the 2020 election, a slew of state laws barring access to abortion have thrust the issue into the national spotlight and set up a potential court battle that could hold consequences for an entire generation.

Top Republicans have distanced themselves from a law in Alabama that effectively outlaws abortion and includes no exceptions for victims of rape or incest. But the governor of Missouri signed a similar bill into law on Friday. It bans abortions after eight weeks of pregnancy and also has no rape or incest exemptions.

Democrats have placed the issue squarely at the center of their agenda, in hope of widening the gender gap between the parties and energizing progressive voters around reproductive rights.

------

But Republicans lost the women’s vote by 19% in November’s midterm elections, enabling Democrats to take the House and flip several state legislatures. Two-thirds of women younger than 30 cast their ballots for Democrats. Independent women voted for Democratic House candidates by 56% to 39%.

Accordingly, Democrats have rallied pro-choice activists with an eye on boosting turnout among women as they seek to limit Trump to a single term and make new gains in Congress and the states.

Could you give up flying? Meet the no-plane pioneers

Could you give up flying? Meet the no-plane pioneers

Growing numbers of travellers are abandoning air travel to help save the planet – even if it means spending 14 days on a train

It has taken Roger Tyers four days to reach Moscow by train from Kiev. His destination is Beijing: a trip that will take 14 days, with a couple of overnight stops along the way. Tyers, an environmental sociologist at the University of Southampton, is on his way to China to research attitudes to the environment, the climate emergency and personal responsibility. “Given that, I thought it would be somewhat hypocritical of me to fly,” he says over Skype from his hostel room.

It has been months in the planning – he had to convince his bosses to give him a month off to travel to and from China. Has it been a pain? “It definitely has. It’s a matter of getting your train schedule in line with your visa requirements. I didn’t realise I needed a visa to travel through Mongolia, even though I’m not stopping there. There have been moments when I’ve been close to giving up and either cancelling the whole trip or just booking a flight.” But he is glad he has stuck with it, he says. “I have to prove it is possible.”

The no-fly movement is a small but growing community of people who are drastically reducing the number of flights they take, or giving up air travel altogether. Many campaigners say they feel flying is about to receive the same attention as shunning plastic or eating less meat because of its 2% contribution to global carbon emissions, predicted to grow to as much as 16% by 2050. In Sweden, where the movement has taken off, a new term has emerged: flygskam, meaning “flight shame”. Siân Berry, the co-leader of the Green party, has called on people to take no more than one flight a year and suggested a tax should be imposed on further journeys. Berry hasn’t flown since 2005.
