Among the new booming counties is El Dorado, the birthplace of the California Gold Rush, which has absorbed an influx of Bay Area transplants who, in search of affordable homes, well-rated schools and access to the outdoors, have packed up their U-Hauls and headed northeast.

The Lukes joined the flow after nearly a dozen of Brians fellow firefighters moved to El Dorado Hills in the last few years. His friends described a neighborhood with a sense of community, filled with young families.
Intrigued after looking at homes online, the couple spent their first wedding anniversary driving through the area and gazing at the manicured homes.
Brian, 38, who once thought it crazy that his co-workers would live more than two hours from their jobs at the Santa Clara County Fire Department and wake up at 3:30 a.m. to commute, suddenly saw the draw.

Though he hasnt experienced animosity, Roby has heard some locals say that they want to maintain their regions more conservative, underdeveloped aura, and fear that newcomers are changing that character. Some 41% of active voters in El Dorado County are Republicans, according to 2020 data from the countys election department, while 31% are Democrats. About 21% are registered with no party preference.
Out of my three neighbors, two have moved because they felt the county was becoming too liberal, Roby said.

At the start of the pandemic, kids made up 2% of new COVID infections. Now, they make up 24%. What happened?

In March 2020, children only accounted for about 2% of new infections. By the end of May, children made up more than 24% new weekly infections even though they only account for 16% of the population, according to data by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Health experts say its a sign more adults and adolescents need to get vaccinated to avoid bringing the virus home and spreading it to children that arent yet eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine.
The virus is an equal opportunity infector. It doesnt care if youre young or old, said Dr. Robert Frenck, professor of pediatrics and director of the Center for Vaccine Research at Cincinnati Childrens Hospital, who presented the data at a Johns Hopkins University-University of Washington symposium Wednesday called Covid-19 and Kids: Impacts, Uncertainties and the Role of Vaccines.
More than 4 million children have tested positive for COVID-19 in the US, 18,500 were hospitalized and 336 have died from the disease, according to the AAP. About 4,000 kids have been hospitalized with multisystem inflammatory syndrome children or MIS-C a rare, but dangerous condition the CDC says is associated with COVID-19.

U.S. jobs report for June shows a gain of 850,000, better than expected.
https://www.nytimes.com/live/2021/07/02/business/economy-stock-market-newsU.S. jobs report for June shows a gain of 850,000, better than expected.
The Labor Department data follows several promising signs about the economic outlook.
Teslas sales more than doubled in the second quarter.
Wages jumped in June as employers tried to lure workers.
Surprisingly strong job gains buoy President Bidens economic push.
Hiring leapt back up in June as employers added 850,000 workers, the government reported Friday. It was the strongest gain in 10 months and a fresh sign that the labor markets recovery is gaining momentum.
The unemployment rate rose slightly, to 5.9 percent, the Labor Department said.
The report follows several promising economic developments this week. Consumer confidence, which surged in June, is at its highest point since the pandemics onset last year. Stocks closed out the first half of the year at record highs, and businesses plans for capital investments are rising. The Congressional Budget Office said Thursday that the economy was on track to recover all the jobs lost in the pandemic by the middle of next year.
I think its a very solid and strong report and very encouraging that were seeing over the last few months continued increase in the net job creation, said Kathy Bostjancic, chief U.S. financial economist for Oxford Economics. She noted that the totals fell below the one million mark that the Federal Reserve chair, Jerome H. Powell, has said he would like to see. Still, she added, the momentum is moving in the right direction.
"shocking vandalism" to Japantown 50 year old cherry trees
The branches on both of the historically significant trees on San Francisco's Sutter Street had been hacked off entirely before their buds could bloom, leaving only their gnarled trunks behind. A staff member at the center was the first to discover the slashed trees early Tuesday morning, but after reviewing security footage found that the vandalism had taken place over a span of a few days.
This was not simply a passerby trying to break a branch off for fun. Someone took their time breaking off every branch, wrote Osaki, who is the executive director of the center, in a Facebook post. This was no easy task as some of the larger branches were over 3 thick and the trees 12 to 15 feet high.
In a phone conversation with SFGATE on Thursday afternoon, Osaki said staff had gone through the security footage to find that the vandal started to break down the branches of the flowering trees on New Years Day, then later came back over the weekend to finish the job.
The person was just grabbing the branches and working at them over and over again. They just went branch by branch, and then went on to the next tree, said Osaki. I think the initial reaction was that we were really sad and hurt when we saw how violently assaulted they were. You look at the pictures and your mouth is just hanging open why would someone want to destroy them so intently? Especially now, finding out the person kept coming back? It was just so shocking.
