In a town where 51% voted for Trump, one official takes a knee during the Pledge of Allegiance

https://www.cnn.com/2018/08/03/us/melissa-schlag-haddam-kneels-pledge-trnd/index.html

(CNN)Melissa Schlag won't stand for President Trump. And since last month, she won't stand for the Pledge of Allegiance, either.

Around the country, people have used kneeling as a form of silent protest. But in the small town of Haddam, Connecticut, where Schlag is a local official, her refusal to stand during the pledge at town meetings has been met with backlash of its own.

In Haddam, supporting Trump has been more common than opposing him. More than half of Haddam voters -- 51% -- cast ballots for the President in the 2016 presidential election, compared to Hillary Clinton's 43% of the vote, according to state data.

What started as a small gesture quickly garnered a lot of attention. Now, people from across the nation are speaking out against Schlag, and some are calling for her to resign.

But the criticism isn't stopping her. As long as Trump's in office, she says she'll keep kneeling

Hawaii volcano eruption: 'Just a matter of time' before Kilauea lava swallows beauty spot

It come as firefighters continue to battle brushfires caused as lava ignites dry vegetation in the south-east of the island.

Axel Kratel has been instrumental in the rescue of numerous domestic and farm animals trapped by lava in remote corners in the south east of Big Island since the start of the latest phase of eruptive activity on May 3, as part of an ongoing efforts to protect its environment.

But he told Express.co.uk it was “just a matter” before Poihoiki, which is threatened by lava which has “stalled” just 500 feet away, was inundated, as well as the popular Isaac Hale boat ramp which is much-used by tourists.

He said: “Pohoiki is one of the gems of Puna, which is the south-east corner of the island which includes Kilauea.

Dan Rather Unloads On Donald Trump Over ‘Racist’ Attack On LeBron James

“It’s a disgrace.”

By Lee Moran

08/04/2018 08:10 AM ET

Veteran journalist Dan Rather unleashed a blistering attack on Donald Trump over Twitter early Saturday.

The former CBS news anchor described the president’s tweeted attack on NBA star LeBron James and CNN host Don Lemon as “racist.”

Trump posted the following late Friday:

Rather responded with this message:

“This is apparently what the President of the United States feels the need to share with the world at what should be long past his bedtime?” Rather asked.

He said Trump’s tweet was “a disgrace” and “racist.”

“And it’s the product of petty but dangerous hatreds,” Rather added. “I repeat this is the PRESIDENT??!?”

Fellow Twitter users also exploded in anger at Trump’s tweet, which was in delayed response to an interview Lemon conducted with James that aired Monday. In it, James said Trump enabled racists and used sports to divide the nation. James, who has previously called Trump a “bum,” and Lemon are yet to respond.

It's True: Trump Is Lying More, and He's Doing It on Purpose, lies are his political "secret sauce"

https://www.newyorker.com/news/letter-from-trumps-washington/trumps-escalating-war-on-the-truth-is-on-purpose

History books will likely declare the last few months a turning point in the Trump Presidency, and Kessler’s laborious work gives us metrics that confirm what is becoming more and more apparent: the recent wave of misstatements is both a reflection of Trump’s increasingly unbound Presidency and a signal attribute of it. The upsurge provides empirical evidence that Trump, in recent months, has felt more confident running his White House as he pleases, keeping his own counsel, and saying and doing what he wants when he wants to. The fact that Trump, while historically unpopular with the American public as a whole, has retained the loyalty of more than eighty per cent of Republicans—the group at which his lies seem to be aimed—means we are in for much more, as a midterm election approaches that may determine whether Trump is impeached by a newly Democratic Congress. At this point, the falsehoods are as much a part of his political identity as his floppy orange hair and the “Make America Great Again” slogan. The untruths, Kessler told me, are Trump’s political “secret sauce.”

-----

other metrics make clear the significant changes in Trump’s approach to the Presidency in recent months, as he has become more confident, less willing to tolerate advisers who challenge him, and increasingly obsessed with the threats to his Presidency posed by the ongoing special-counsel investigation. One is the epic turnover rate of Trump’s White House staff, which as of June already stood at the unprecedented level of sixty-one per cent among the President’s top advisers.

Boston Clothier The Tannery "I do not want your kind in my store"

Boston clothier sued for discriminating against customers based on race, immigration status

A phone call and email to the Tannery were not immediately returned.

The complaint alleges that in December 2017, an African American man in his 60s tried to enter the Tannery to shop at 7:40 p.m., about 20 minutes before closing time. The man was interested in buying a Canada Goose jacket.

The complaint alleges that in December 2017, an African American man in his 60s tried to enter the Tannery to shop at 7:40 p.m., about 20 minutes before closing time. The man was interested in buying a Canada Goose jacket.

Hassan allegedly approached the man and prevented him from entering, asking him, “What’s up, brother man?” Hassan was with a white, female store employee and told the man that the store was closing at 8 p.m.

The man was standing in the entry way when he saw several white shoppers, including a white couple, go inside to browse. None of them was told that the store was closing in 20 minutes.

The man asked Hassan why he was being stopped as other customers continued to enter the store. The complaint alleges Hassan became hostile and told the man, “I do not want your kind in my store.” The female employee said nothing and went back to the store counter.

The woman was confused by the question and responded, “What do you mean? I am from here. I live in the area.”

Hassan asked again, “No, where are you from?”

The woman again tried to ask about finding shoes in her size. Hassan turned to another customer and allegedly said, “I love Trump! I am glad he is going to get rid of all the immigrants because I do not trust immigrants!” Hassan continued talking about his distrust of immigrants and the woman decided she didn’t want the shoes anymore.

On her way out, Hassan allegedly yelled at her, “Get out of here! We don’t want you here! I don’t trust your people!”

The Children at the Trump Rallies. What is it like to see young people exposed to so much anger?

The Children at the Trump Rallies
What is it like to see young people exposed to so much anger? Heartbreaking, says a Times photographer.

One of the most poignant photos from that time was of a boy, dressed as a fledgling Trump, in the front row of a rally with his father in Grand Junction, Colo., just two weeks before the election. Together, they chanted, “Lock her up, lock her up!” The father beamed with pride. Vitriol sputtered from his son Jaden’s mouth.

?quality=90&auto=webp

Nearly 19 months after Mr. Trump took office, I photographed my first Make America Great Again rally on Thursday in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. It felt eerily familiar. The staging, the music, the lighting, the faces in the crowd, the metal cage that confined the press, and even the wording of the opening announcement urging supporters not to hurt any protesters, were all the same. The journalists I had befriended on the campaign were all there. The jarring difference in this all-too-familiar setting was that “president” now preceded the former candidate’s name.

As before, I was drawn to the children, but this time through the lens of 19 months of the Trump administration. The people in that arena supported the actions of a sitting president, not just the musings of a candidate. In that time, the anger I experienced on the trail had taken shape with real-world consequences. The chants of “Build the wall” in 2016 were realized in a haphazard zero-tolerance immigration policy that resulted in nearly 3,000 child separations in 2018.

That night, I photographed 10-year-old Gianna Musolino holding her father’s arm in the most tender and gentle embrace, her arms entwined around his, her head nestled in the soft bend of his elbow. There was no mistaking the comfort and protection she felt under his wing and the pride he felt in providing it.

?quality=90&auto=webp
I thought again about my son, as I have done so many times over these past few months, imagining with deep sadness what it would be like for him to be taken away from us and what it might do to him. How could any parent possibly support a president capable of this?

Even the NRA Disagrees With Florida Sheriff Who Cited "Stand Your Ground" in Parking-Space Killing

The NRA and Republican lawmakers in Florida are speaking out against the Pinellas County sheriff who chose not to arrest a white gun owner who killed a black man last month in a heated argument over a parking spot. Even the powerful gun-rights organization thinks Sheriff Bob Gualtieri misapplied the state’s controversial “stand your ground” law—which the NRA has previously called a “human right.”

The deadly confrontation began after Markeis McGlockton and his 5-year-old son went into a Circle A convenience store to buy snacks and drinks while McGlockton’s girlfriend, Britany Jacobs, and two of their children were parked in a disabled spot. While McGlockton and his son were inside, Michael Drejka—a regular at Circle A who detested able-bodied people parking in reserved spots—approached the car and began lecturing Jacobs about Florida’s disabled-parking regulations. Jacobs told Good Morning America that Drejka was “harassing” her and said that he “was picking a fight.”

Security footage shows McGlockton exiting Circle A and shoving Drejka to the ground before appearing to take several steps away from him. While sitting on the ground, Drejka took a pistol out of his pocket and shot McGlockton once in the chest. McGlockton staggered back into the store and collapsed. He died shortly after.

------------------

This week, the NRA and state lawmakers behind the “stand your ground” legislation challenged Sheriff Gualtieri’s interpretation of the law in the McGlockton case.

“Nothing in either the 2005 law or the 2017 law prohibits a Sheriff from making an arrest in a case where a person claims self-defense if there is probable cause that the use of force was unlawful,” wrote Marion Hammer, Tallahassee’s NRA lobbyist, in a statement to Politico.
Hammer added that the law does not say that someone can sue a sheriff for making an arrest when there is probable cause.

Dennis Baxley, a Republican state senator who sponsored the 2005 “stand your ground” laws when he was in the Florida House, also objected to Gualtieri’s reading of the legislation as a “subjective standard.” Rather, Baxley explained to Politico, the law uses a “reasonable-person standard. It’s not that you were just afraid.” State Sen. Rob Bradley, who sponsored the 2017 legislation, came to the same conclusion as Baxter. “This idea that Florida law is concerned about the subjective perceptions of a shooter is wrong,” he told Politico.

Despite the mounting criticisms from the victim’s family, Democratic state lawmakers, civil rights organizations, and now gun-rights advocates, Gualtieri has remained steadfast in his decision to let the shooter go. In a lengthy press conference on Tuesday, Gualtieri insisted, “I didn’t get it wrong.”

Detroit police chief concerned about video showing officer punching naked woman in hospital

http://www.fox2detroit.com/news/local-news/live-police-chief-speaks-about-officer-punching-naked-woman-at-detroit-receiving

DETROIT (WJBK) - Detroit Police Chief James Craig said on Thursday that he is concerned by video that shows an officer punching a naked woman at Detroit Receiving Hospital, specifically because the woman's back is turned and the officer continued to punch her.

Video was sent only to FOX 2 from a woman who was inside Detroit Receiving Hospital, visiting a family member. She heard the commotion break out in the hall near the room she was in and recorded video of three police officers trying to subdue the naked woman.

The woman was repeatedly punched by a Detroit Police officer while other officers tried to restrain her. It appears when she started spitting, the officer started punching. The woman who shot the video believes the woman being beaten was mentally unstable and was a patient at the hospital.

NEWSER) – A Detroit police corporal has been suspended after cellphone video emerged showing him beating a naked, unarmed, and possibly mentally ill woman inside an emergency room as she was restrained, per the AP. The video posted on WJBK-TV's website shows the male officer punching the woman about a dozen times on Wednesday at Detroit Receiving Hospital. She can be heard shouting a threat at someone before being grabbed by one of the police officers and security staff. The male officer then began punching her. What is shown on the video is "very disturbing," Detroit police Chief James Craig told reporters Thursday, adding that a criminal investigation has begun. "There were points where the suspect had turned her back, but the officer continued to punch," Craig said. "It was at that point we had grave concerns for the officer's actions."

A rep for the Wayne County prosecutor's office said that if and when the police department sends a warrant request for the officer's arrest, her office will follow its usual procedure in police-involved cases by conducting an independent investigation before making a charging decision. The unnamed corporal is an 18-year veteran of the police department "who has a good record." He and his partner took the woman to the hospital Wednesday evening after responding to a report of a "lewd and lascivious" person. The woman spat on hospital staff, bit a security guard and tried to bite the corporal, the chief added. Craig said he is concerned that the officers didn't follow procedure by handcuffing a "mentally ill person" and that he thinks the officers' body camera footage tells "a little bit of a different story" than the cellphone footage.

How Georgia's Race For Governor Will Be Won

The reality that this election won’t be any of the things that the Yankee pundits will be claiming from now till November — not a “referendum on race,” not a “test” of whether Georgia is “ready” for a female governor, and sure as hell not anything ideological or policy-oriented — doesn’t mean that all those factors, and more, won’t make it a rip-roaring fireworks display. Quite the contrary. Kemp will be race-baiting and culture-warring up a storm, and it will get spectacularly ugly and stay that way through November. Abrams, for her part, isn’t just a genius when it comes to political strategy: As she recently showed a national audience on Late Night With Seth Meyers, she’s also a once-in-a-generation political charmer, possessed of the sense of humor and sharpness of wit it takes to cut an opponent like Kemp down to size without lapsing into defensiveness or moral outrage. Check out the way she gleefully pokes at the infamous Kemp ad where he points a double-barrel shotgun at his daughter’s date:

Kemp showed in his primary campaign — running against other white conservatives — that he won’t shy away from anything that helps him stoke old white Georgians’ prejudices. Victory in November, for Kemp, hinges on whether he can turn Abrams into the fictionalized radical black woman he’s already running against — not so much another Hillary Clinton or Nancy Pelosi as another “radical black leftist” like Angela Davis or (closer to home) former Georgia congresswoman and eternal GOP bete noire Cynthia McKinney.

Of course, Abrams needs to make sure that every progressive white, black, Asian, Latino, and fair-minded Georgia voter sees Kemp as not just the state’s version of Donald Trump, but the reincarnation of George C. Wallace. The beauty part, for Abrams and the Democrats, is that Kemp has already done most of that vital work for her — both as the voter-suppressing Secretary of State and the great foe of Abrams’s New Georgia Project, and as a gubernatorial candidate whose idea of a racially coded message is nothing less than an advertisement that strongly suggests he’d like to lead an old-fashioned lynch mob, this time aimed at running Latinos out of the state:

Abrams won’t have to cast Kemp as a wild-eyed racist, misogynist, religious bigot — the list could go on. Dude is already doing it for her, and his only path to victory is to keep it up.
