Paramedics waited outside as man was dying, his address was blacklisted as hostile to 1st responders

Dad died after medics waited outside his home, lawsuit says. His son called 911 twice

A Seattle man died of cardiac arrest after his 13-year-old son called 911 twice about him “barely breathing” and having a heart attack, according to his family’s lawsuit.

Before the boy dialed 911 a second time, medics were already outside his father’s apartment — waiting — on Nov. 2, 2021, a complaint filed in Washington state Superior Court in King County says.

After they arrived, first responders entered the apartment 13 minutes later, when their attempts to perform CPR and use a defibrillator on William Yurek proved unsuccessful, according to the complaint. Yurek, a father of four children, died at age 46, according to personal injury attorney Mark Lindquist, who represented Yurek’s family.

Medics delayed saving Yurek because they were waiting for a police escort — as Yurek was mistakenly on an outdated “blacklist” of people considered hostile to first responders, according to the complaint, which says “a previous tenant had been on the (blacklist).” Yurek’s apartment was “marked with a ‘caution note’ for reported hostility to Seattle Fire and Police,” the complaint says.

One year after Yurek’s family sued the city of Seattle over his death, their wrongful death lawsuit was settled for $1,860,000 on Oct. 2, Linquist announced in a news release.

A new law allows homeowner to sell ADUs like condos, boosting homeownership.

I see complications arising when the homeowner wants to sell.."single family home but excludes the garage" or "home sale excludes one bedroom and bath that belongs to another homeowner"

https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2023-10-14/a-new-law-allows-homeowner-to-sell-adus-like-condos-boosting-homeownership-heres-how-ab-1033-works

A new law allows homeowner to sell ADUs like condos, boosting homeownership. Here’s how AB 1033 works

Accessory dwelling units, also referred to as ADUs and “granny flats,” have been available in California only as rentals. But a new law, Assembly Bill 1033, is giving Californians the opportunity to buy and sell them as condominiums.

ADUs come in all shapes and sizes — for example, a converted garage, a small home in the backyard, or, as often seen in San Francisco, an unused portion of the main house, said Assemblyman Phil Ting (D-San Francisco), who drafted the legislation.

______

As with new condominiums, homeowners building ADUs must notify the local utilities, including water, sewer, gas and electric, of the creation and separate conveyance of the unit. Each property will also have to form a homeowners association to assess dues to cover the cost of caring for the property’s exterior and shared spaces, such as the driveway, a pool or a common roof.

Similar to condominiums on one property, the home and the ADU will have two different property taxes, Ting said.

At daybreak, Hila Fakliro looked up to the sky from the vodka and Red Bull cocktails she was mixing: “Oh, my God,” she said. “Look! There are fireworks!”

A fitness instructor, aged 26, she was drawn to trance music festivals as a means, she said, “to disconnect your mind from all the tension in Israel.” The Tribe of Nova gathering, celebrating the Jewish holiday of Sukkot amid groves of eucalyptus trees only three miles from Gaza, seemed particularly well organized, so the fireworks struck her as no more than an extravagant flourish.

Her fellow bartender, whom she had met just hours before, turned to her: “I don’t think those are fireworks.”

They were, in fact, the white flashes of Hamas rockets from Gaza, the fire at dawn signaling an attack that would turn fields full of young Israelis dancing to psychedelic music into a slaughterhouse. In this massacre of its youth, Israel’s 75-year-old quest for some carefree normalcy met the murderous fury of those long-oppressed Palestinians who deny the state’s right to exist.

Portland business man calmly kills one man, attempts to kill another in road rage horror

A probable cause affidavit filed by the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office states that Hammond was driving a black Mercedes Benz when he parked in front of the Moxy Hotel on Southwest Alder, partially blocking traffic. He remained sitting in the car and left the engine idling.

A man driving a gray Toyota Tundra east on Alder, identified Friday as Martin, was directly behind Hammond and when Hammond stopped, Martin drove his Tundra around the Mercedes Benz.

According to the DA court document, the two drivers exchanged middle fingers as Martin steered around Hammond’s car and drove through the intersection between Alder and Southwest 10th.

Then, Martin stopped his truck and walked back across 10th toward Hammond.

“[Hammond] who had begun loading firearm as soon as he saw [the other driver] walking toward him,” the DA document states. “[Hammond] later said that he could see Ryan Martin was unarmed.”

According to the document, Martin tapped on the driver’s side window of Hammond’s Mercedes Benz.

“It is unclear what, if anything Ryan Martin said while tapping on the window, but witnesses described shouting,” the DA document says. “Defendant rolled down the window and immediately shot Ryan Martin in the chest.”

"I called 911, and he shot another gentleman on the sidewalk and then fired again the third time," she said, "and then he took off around the corner."

She said the second victim, the one who survived, was just a bystander.

"It's traumatic. It's horrific. And our government needs to do something to clean this city up and help not let this happen again," the witness said through tears.

Another woman at the scene, Alyssa Isenstein Krueger, said she was walking out of her doctor's office when she saw a man on the ground who had been shot in the leg and was screaming.

Hammond then rolled down his window and immediately shot Martin in the chest, investigators said. As Martin was lying on the ground, he pleaded with Hammond, saying "I'm sorry. I had a bad day." Hammond allegedly tried to shoot him a second time — then his gun jammed.

Video collected by investigators showed that this scene went on for a full minute, the affidavit says, as Martin lay dying in the street and Hammond tried to get his gun to work so that he could shoot again. Witnesses told police that Hammond at one point flashed some kind of badge "as if he were a police man," and said something to the effect of, "You are lucky I didn't shoot you in the head."

________

Gomez's phone captured the moment when Hammond got his gun functioning again, shooting Gomez in the leg. Hammond then started driving slowly away, the affidavit says, firing a second shot at Gomez that went wide.

According to the affidavit, Hammond called 911 as he was driving himself toward the county courthouse, and freely admitted to dispatch that he'd shot the two men.

"He believed he was justified in doing so because Ryan Martin menaced him and because Sam Gomez might have had a weapon," the affidavit adds.

S. Jersey GOP distance themselves from Sen Durr: "A woman does have a choice! Keep her legs closed"

https://www.politico.com/news/2023/10/12/new-jersey-gop-candidates-durr-abortion-00121189

Battered by late campaign season attacks on abortion, several South Jersey Republican lawmakers and candidates are distancing themselves from past comments made by one of their colleagues, state Sen. Ed Durr.

“The social media posts by Senator Ed Durr were offensive and unacceptable. They don’t represent us or what we believe in any way,” reads a joint statement to POLITICO from the candidates in legislative districts 4 and 8.

Prior to his shocking upset of then-Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-Gloucester) in 2021, Durr (R-Gloucester) — who himself is facing a competitive challenge by former Assemblymember John Burzichelli (D-Gloucester) — made several inflammatory social media posts. Now a newly-formed Democratic political organization is highlighting and tying them to the other candidates with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of TV ads in the region.

The ad, by a nonprofit called Brighter Future Forward, says the candidates “would ban abortion and they stand by when their extreme colleague Ed Durr spews hate.” The ad then refers to a 2020 Facebook post Durr made in which he wrote “A woman does have a choice! Keep her legs closed,” as well as a post Durr “liked” that called for “spaying women like dogs.”

U.S. institutions under fire for their support -- or silence -- on Israel

U.S. institutions under fire for their support — or silence — on Israel

It might seem like a safe move: condemn violence on both sides of the conflict in Israel and express support for Jews and Palestinians alike because of the losses they’ve suffered. But in a moment this heavy with emotion and rage, few moves are safe.

U.S. companies, politicians, universities and school districts who took that approach found themselves under fire from Jewish groups and others for appearing to downplay what began this crisis a week ago: a militant attack by Hamas on Israel that killed hundreds of civilians.

Corporate leaders, too, have struggled to walk an appropriate line between acknowledging a traumatic moment and weighing the very real business risks of saying the wrong thing.

This week, many proceeded gingerly.

The chipmaker Intel, which counts more than 11,700 employees at five facilities in Israel, told Reuters it was “closely monitoring” the situation there and “taking steps to safeguard and support our workers.”

Microsoft condemned the “hatred and brutality” and pointed to “acts of terrorism” without naming Hamas. A statement from chief human resources officer Kathleen Hogan expressed sympathy for Israelis who have been killed, injured or lost loved ones and said the company’s main focus was the safety of its nearly 3,000 workers there. It also addressed Microsoft’s Jewish and Palestinian employees globally, noting the fears and concerns that each group is feeling.

George Santos wants speaker nominees to kiss his ass

Rep. George Santos threw a temper tantrum and vowed not to support Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise for speaker of the House because the fellow Republican failed to call and ask for his support.

With two criminal cases filed and an expulsion effort looming, Santos opted to go on the offensive by warning he won’t back Scalise unless the GOP nominee for speaker kisses his ring.

The embattled Long Island Republican said he was irked that Scalise did not make a personal pitch for his support in the speaker fight and hasn’t reached out at all since he took office.

“I’ve come to the conclusion that my VOTE doesn’t matter to him,” Santos said late Wednesday.

“I’m now declaring I’m an ANYONE but Scalise, and come hell or high water I won’t change my mind,” Santos added.

Unlike other Republican holdouts, Santos didn’t make any political or policy demands.

The number of Palestinians who have died since the start of the war in Gaza rose to 1,799, and there have been 7,388 wounded, the Gaza Ministry of Health said Friday. Israel said on Thursday that 1,300 people were killed during rocket attacks and deadly raids into Israeli territory by fighters from Hamas, a U.S-designated terror group. More than 3,000 people have been wounded.

The United Nations on Thursday said that 12 of its workers had been killed in the fighting in Gaza since Saturday. Israel said Thursday it had so far confirmed the identities of 97 hostages taken to Gaza.
