PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — The parking lot of a Wawa convenience store here was transformed into a sea of red gasoline cans on Saturday as hundreds of residents waited for hours in hopes of powering generators and cars after the city, about 30 miles northwest of Fort Myers, was battered by Hurricane Ian.
The store, one of only a few purveyors of gas that had reopened since Wednesday’s storm, corralled cars into a line that stretched for more than a mile along a suburban road. One woman was pushing her van, which appeared to have run out of gas, as the line inched forward. Hundreds more people arrived carrying empty gas cans or pushing them in wheelbarrows.

As the line grew longer under the beating sun, several people fumed that much of the national attention appeared to be focused on wealthier areas like Naples or Cape Coral.
One man at the very end of the line, who declined to give his name, said he had not seen any power company workers in his neighborhood and wondered aloud why federal aid had not arrived to help him. He said he needed gas to buy food, but he grew frustrated when he learned that the Wawa was accepting only cash.
At the front of the line was Gary Jaworski, who said he had waited for four hours, beginning at 7 a.m., to fill up four cans of gas. He said that although he fully supported Gov. Ron DeSantis, he was frustrated at what he viewed as a broken promise by the governor — that gas stations would be able to quickly reopen after the storm.
“Where’s all the fuel?” he asked. “Every gas station or filling station was to have a generator prepared to go at all times.”

Health department temporarily closes SF's Canyon Market amid rodent infestation
The San Francisco Department of Public Health temporarily shut down Glen Park grocery store Canyon Market on Wednesday because of a rodent infestation. The store's owner, Janet Tarlov, blamed the rat problem on a neighbor leaving large piles of birdseed at the nearby BART station, reported the San Francisco Chronicle (SFGATE and the San Francisco Chronicle are both owned by Hearst but operate independently of one another).
The Glen Park resident has allegedly been scattering pounds of birdseed to feed pigeons at the Glen Park BART station and parking lot since February 2020, according to the Glen Park Association. Despite Tarlov's ongoing requests for help from the health department since the issue began, the resident reportedly continues to dump birdseed. And it appears to have brought a rat problem to the neighborhood.

A wave election now looks a lot less likely for Republicans

House handicappers are now predicting more modest gains for Republicans as the party looks to ensure that it winds up in the majority rather than trying to expand the playing field to claim a slew of seats in November.
“Republican groups are increasingly hyper-focusing their resources on the several dozen races that hold the most promise to get them to a bare majority of 218, rather than the next 20 to 30 races that would get them to the larger ‘governing majority’ Kevin McCarthy has hoped for,” wrote David Wasserman, the House editor at the Cook Political Report with Amy Walter, on Friday.
Wasserman put the ceiling on Republican gains at 20 seats.
That prediction comes just days after Inside Elections, another non-partisan tip sheet, ratcheted down its prediction for Republican gains in the House from a range of 12-30 seats to a range of 8-20 seats.
“Republicans are still the favorites to gain the five seats they need for a House majority, although their majority will likely be narrow,” wrote Nathan L. Gonzales, Erin Covey and Jacob Rubashkin.

An Apple representative confirmed the departure to CNBC, saying, “Tony is leaving Apple.”
The departure was spurred by a TikTok video posted Sept. 5, according to Bloomberg, which first reported the news.
In the video, reviewed by CNBC, Blevins is getting out of an expensive Mercedes-Benz sports car and is asked what he does for a living by Daniel Mac, who has a channel centered around asking people in expensive cars questions.
In the video, Blevins responds, “I race cars, play golf and fondle big-breasted women. But I take weekends and major holidays off.” The remark appears to be a reference to a similar quote in the movie “Arthur.”

As a freshman congressman in 2013, Ron DeSantis was unambiguous: A federal bailout for the New York region after Hurricane Sandy was an irresponsible boondoggle, a symbol of the “put it on the credit card mentality” he had come to Washington to oppose.

Nearly a decade later, as his state confronts the devastation and costly destruction wrought by Hurricane Ian, Mr. DeSantis is appealing to the nation’s better angels — and betting on its short memory.
“As you say, Tucker, we live in a very politicized time,” Mr. DeSantis, now Florida’s governor, told Tucker Carlson on Wednesday night, outlining his request for full federal reimbursement up front for 60 days and urging the Biden administration to do the right thing. “But you know, when people are fighting for their lives, when their whole livelihood is at stake, when they’ve lost everything — if you can’t put politics aside for that, then you’re just not going to be able to.

Very aggressive" individuals impersonating elections officials have reportedly been knocking on Shasta County residents' doors and questioning their voter registration status, Shasta County's elections office warned residents this week.
"They’re wearing very distinctive neon vests and some kind of ID badge that says 'voter task force,'" County Clerk Cathy Darling Allen told SFGATE. "We are being told that these people are being very aggressive and intimating that they work in this office when they do not. We want voters to know this isn’t an official effort; we have a whole host of tools we use to verify info. Door knocking is not something we would ever do."
Allen said it is probably a safe assumption that members of the fake "voter task force" are individuals who believe, incorrectly, that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from former President Donald Trump. In the time since that election, her office has become a "dumping ground for frustrations" and has had to deal with things ranging from frivolous copy-pasted public records requests to demands that the office preserve records it is required to destroy by California state law.
"What we've heard is these people aren't going door-to-door," Allen said. "People who contacted us said, 'My house is the only one on the street they went to.'"
Allen is aware of at least three such instances in Anderson, and at least one in Redding. She said there is no discernible pattern for why certain residents were targeted, and referred the matter to local law enforcement. She has yet to receive any updates.
