The impacts of the climate crisis are proving much worse than predicted, and governments must act more urgently to adapt to them or face global disaster, the UK president of the UN climate talks has warned on the eve of a landmark new scientific assessment of the climate.
Alok Sharma, who led the Cop26 climate summit last year, said: “The changes in the climate we are seeing today are affecting us much sooner and are greater than we originally thought. The impacts on our daily lives will be increasingly severe and stark. We will be doing ourselves and our populations a huge disservice if we fail to prepare now, based on the very clear science before us.”
In a report to be published on Monday, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is expected to show that droughts, floods and heatwaves will increase in frequency and intensity, with devastating consequences, and all parts of the globe will be affected.
Sharma also said climate talks must continue this year at international forums such as the G20, despite Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Russia is a member of the G20, after being ejected from the G8 over its annexation of Crimea. Sharma said he spoke to his Russian counterpart some weeks ago before the current escalation, but they have not spoken since.

Sweden prepares to shut airspace to Russian planes

“It is now absolutely necessary to proceed with further tough measures to isolate Russia,” Dahlgren told public service radio SR. The Minister said the most effective course of action would be for EU countries to make a joint decision.
Sweden will push for such a flight ban at a meeting of EU foreign ministers scheduled later today, which could form part of the latest package of sanctions against Russia.
Many EU member states have already closed their airspaces to Russian aircraft, while a more concrete decision could soon follow. “We want this to happen as quickly as possible and the best and fastest way is if we can get a common EU decision,” said Dahlgren.
“The background is, of course, that we want to go ahead with even more and sharper efforts to isolate Russia. One such effort is to close Swedish airspace and, better still, the whole of European airspace to Russian flights,” he went on to say.

Greene appeared as a surprise guest at Friday’s America First Political Action Conference at the Orlando World Center Marriott, the white nationalist rival to the Conservative Political Action Conference. She followed that up with her own panel at CPAC Saturday morning, “They Can’t Shut Us Up!”
When confronted by CBS’ Robert Costa Saturday about her appearance, Greene said she didn’t endorse the views of and claimed to not know organizer and antisemite Nick Fuentes, who praised Russian President Vladimir Putin for his invasion of Ukraine.
“I do not know Nick Fuentes. I have never heard him speak, I have never seen a video. I do not know what his views are so I am not aligned with anything that is controversial,” she said.

As Russia's invasion of Ukraine continues into its fourth day, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz addressed the lower house of German parliament, the Bundestag, on the government's decision to directly supply weapons to Ukrainian troops.
"We need to support Ukraine in its hour of desperate need," Scholz told a special session of the Bundestag.
"There was no other response possible to Putin's aggression," he added, referring to the release of German weapons to Ukraine.
"It was Putin who chose this war, not the Russian people, so we must see clearly that this is Putin's war," the chancellor said.
