In spite of the total lack of interest in the context of DU, I have realized the question is really interesting and the Boss is rather deep. If and only if you take the time to think about it.
Maybe the reason for the lack of resonance here is because the Democrats were born to be conservative, and I'm fundamentally pro-change. When you look at the overall history of the Democratic Party, I think you have to conclude that the party is fundamentally defensive of the status quo, with a few exceedingly rare exceptions like FDR. Even in some of the cases where the Democrats seemed to be making changes, you can often argue that they were acting as true conservatives. Take the civil rights legislation, for example. Wasn't it really a conservative action that actually defended the old notion of all men being created equal?
I'm sure part of the motivation of my comment was an article (in "The Atlantic"?) that said the Republicans were born to cut taxes, but no, they weren't. The Republican Party was actually born as a progressive party struggling for social justice for the slaves. Today's take-the-money-and-run gang is an extremely recent creation of fake conservatives. I would say it only goes back to the time of Reagan, when it was largely a reaction to the Nixon fiasco. In a different country, one where Nixon was not pardoned and actually held to account for his crimes, a country where justice was really for all and fair and equal and all that jazz, maybe the so-called Republicans would have turned over a new leaf rather than a new scam.
Time to consider what the Boss was actually saying? I think the song "Born to run" is about REAL freedom.
