(33,643 posts)Though I suppose you could lump those both into your two general categories, I think they're somewhat distinct phenomenon.
As an aside, I have a personal theory ... in the very most basic sense, Conservative voters are people who's brain structures are genetically more closely-related to Chimpanzees, whereas Liberal Voters are people who's brain structure is more closely-related to Bonobos.
These two species are known to be our two closest cousins, and even proto-hominids (let alone homo sapiens) are only a couple million years old ... the tiniest of blips in evolutionary history. We, as humans, are VERY MUCH like these two other mammals.
And you see this divide between liberal and conservative-type thinking throughout human history. Hell, Old Testament vs New Testament is basically Conservative vs. Liberal ... though the average wingnut won't be convinced of that idea, it is objectively true.
Anyways, I don't think this clear distinction between us and them ... is random, rather, I am of the opinion that liberals and conservatives are different genetically (though it's a very, very tiny difference, and both genes persist and are exhibited fairly randomly in offspring), and that eventually it will be discovered that we're more like bonobos, and they're more like chimps. Not different enough to be considered 'sub-species', and of course we've massively interbred throughout history, but ... there is a genetic difference.
