He didn't get the concept of branding. And I think if he had, he could have had a much better chance. Unfortunately in this day and age, it's really all about branding. Most people just heard the label "Socialist" and freaked. No matter how much he explained, he could not change their ingrained concept of that world.
Nice chatting with you TwilightZone. I like your screen name. I pretty much feel like that is what the past three and a half years have been like.
