The longer Trump is in office, the more he'll bollix things up. Prosecuting Trump is a nice to have, but he's vulnerable to state prosecution at this point to the extent that Federal crimes really don't matter. At this point, with less than three months to the election, the GOP fielding Pence as POTUS is the least bad of a bunch of lousy options
