9. The reason Californians get excited about this

is that, unlike the Midwest, we rarely get precipitation outside of the rainy season - November through early April. And the snow in the Sierra Nevadas becomes our water source - at least for northern California - for the rest of the year, and hopefully builds up a reserve for the future dry years.
