In reply to the discussion: Are you considering leaving the US permanently [View all]DFW
(58,738 posts)I've been living here for a good many years. In 1974, I met this lovely vision:
Not surprisingly, I enjoyed her company. Incredibly surprisingly, she seemed to enjoy mine.
After seven years,
I was hoping she would consider getting married. One year later, she did, and we did
She still visits the States with me a lot. Sometimes to hang with interesting people
Sometimes just to chill:
?
And she DOES enjoy her visits. One of our daughters even lives there (they both grew up in Germany).
But she does not want to live in the USA, and I don't want to live without her. That didn't leave
the decision much room for ambiguity. The outfit I joined in 1975 was flexible enough, and open enough
to innovation, that I was able to do my job over here before there was even an internet. So, here I am.
Is it permanent? Who the hell knows? I've been here a long time. She has been with me for 47 years now,
and that's one habit I don't foresee breaking any time soon. I traded one locality for another, because I'm not
trading my life with her for anything. I tried to fit in, and think I've done a half-way decent job of it. I'm
fluent in the language of the country I live in, and close to it in all but two of the languages of the countries
it borders on, plus a few others. My Czech and my Polish remain somewhat deficient.
