(51,312 posts)NATO developed the now almost universally used phonetic alphabet in 1956 from various other systems, especially the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
Most all international orgs use the NATO system, and spell A and J as Alfa and Juliett. The purpose of the whole thing is avoid confusion for non English speakers and extensive trials found that those two spellings worked best in doing that.
But, one org did not. The American National Standards Institute, who still insist on Alpha and Juliet as the spellings. Many asshole RW Americans use the ANSI spellings and call the almost universal NATO spellings all sorts of xenophobic names.
I know this from my real life experiences with people of many nations that I deal with in the security and military arenas, at academic, business, and recreational levels.
It is so typically American. The exact same snotty xenophobia and paranoia goes on with many Americans and the metric system (hey Jim Bob, that there metric system is a commie plot!!!).
