can still get away with the horrible, antisocial, infantile behavior he told them was absolutely acceptable.

The politicians among them are only concerned with whether they can still profit from encouraging that behavior - because they have profited mightily these past few years - or if they have to pivot and pretend they never encouraged that behavior. The morality of the behavior is absolutely not part of the equation.

He made it OK to be a bigot and a sexist. As long as he encouraged that and made them into a happy club of bigotry and sexism, they did not care at all about the craziness. Because when you are spouting bigotry and sexism, you can believe you are superior to whole swaths of the population.

Hypocrisy, yes absolutely. He is chock full of feelings of inferiority, and all his actions have only one objective: to reduce his self-hatred and feelings of inferiority. His father made his brother a scapegoat. His whole life purpose is not to be labeled a loser like his father labeled his brother. Even though, deep down, he knows himself to be a loser.

TFG taught them all to live for that same single goal. They don't care about the ramifications. They have found their society of other losers who can all high-five each other and tell each other how superior they are, when deep down they know they aren't.

Powerful stuff. And the more inferior they know themselves to be, the more powerful it is.
