5. 'Alleged' is pretty standard usage in journalism

it prevents newspapers/stations from being sued, and is a rule taught in every Journalism school in the country. For example, the suspect in custody for the death of the Idaho college students would be referred to as the 'alleged killer'. If he's convicted, then he can safely be labelled a killer or murderer.
