I got on a plane for NYC to Dallas that morning. In the taxi from the DFW airport to the house, I turned on the news and stared in disbelief. Hoping it was an error, I called some mutual friends, and they confirmed it was true.
But though she will never move or speak like she did pre-shooting, she is still there, inside. She is a medical miracle.
Eighteen months ago, at a little dinner in D.C., she looked pretty fine for someone who had been thought hopeless right after being shot:
