Some, but a lot of the Asian stores around here literally say "Oriental Store" on their sign that they put up

In Spanish Oriente is a geographical term used on maps for East and Occidente for West.

It is still somewhat acceptable for cuisine and geographic references, but never for people

True enough. My carpets brought back from my work overseas were Egyptian, Iranian, and Indian BUT...

It shouldn't be used to refer to people. I still hear it with reference to rugs, though.
