So out of the 10 strangers he's probably got three on his payroll.

They'll keep up a friendly banter while he earns money drilling.

The four of them will keep the others busy with bullshit delaying tactics and lies until it's too late.

And when the lifeboat the three paid for arrives and it's only big enough for the guy who was drilling...
