These are facts of academic hiring. Post 3 in this thread makes it clear that he was the recruited hire. You think they just have positions hanging around magically for economic historians at the same time that they're recruiting their big Dean of Admission catch away from Johns Hopkins? They made the position for her. Good for her. Maybe she's brilliant, and turned out to be the best professor in the whole economics department. It's still a fucking weird and archaic practice that rarely happens outside of universities.
