In reply to the discussion: Consumers Fed Up With Food Costs Are Ditching Big Brands [View all]KPN
(15,971 posts)papers like the Guardian, Boston Globe or LA Times, then I'll applaud. .... Having said that, I do think there is evidence of consumer demand declining for higher priced food in grocery stores as well as restaurants. There's also a lot of substitution going on. At some price point, people become unwilling to buy or they substitute by purchasing a less expensive product. I do the grocery shopping for my wife and I, and it's evident to me just by looking at shelf stocking and people's shopping carts at the register. The most obvious example is the potato chips aisle. I repeatedly see people going down that aisle and moving on without putting anything in their cart -- me included. Who wants to pay $5 for a 7.5 ounce bag of chips?! Eventually, producers are going to have to lower their prices as this continues. ... So, yeah, big money is going to pro-actively blame labor and unions so they can keep their obnoxious profit levels afloat.
