Are of or approaching retirement age.

In fact in most states since they fall into a state teacher or public employee retirement system that reach eligibility to retire in late fifties.

Hard to become more than an associate professor before 50.

They run major research, oversee grant writing, etc. frequently into late 70s or even 80.

No one questions Attenborough ability to oversee making complicated logistical decisions about making documentaries, because experience is valuable. If you are humble enough to learn from what happened before.
