... I would be more concerned about the loss of hours and pay instead of some tender feelings.

Also what about Grandma when she needs her meds from the pharmacy? Or the young mother who desperately needs diapers and has 20 minutes to get them?

How long is the appropriate time to shut down?

1 hour? 1 week? Never open again?

The store acted correctly.
