In reply to the discussion: Has there ever been a mass protest against the media? We need one now, that's for sure. [View all]RidinWithHarris
(790 posts)Realize that a huge portion of the population who dislike the mainstream media express that displeasure by turning to Fox, NewsMax, OANN, and whatever right wing noise pops up in social media.
Even if boycotting mainstream media reached a level high enough to put a noticeable dent in profits (highly unlikely in my opinion), they could easily go the route of becoming trashier and more sensationalistic to increase revenue rather than (gasp!) become better, more responsible journalists.
While I also acknowledge the kind of public protest movement Im talking about would be tough to organize and pull off, it would both give the media a clear indication that improving quality and responsibility was the desired outcome, and such a protest would reach the public itself and make more people think about the quality of the news they receive.
Consider too that poor coverage isnt just due to corporate machinations and profit motives. Some journalists probably mistakenly believe theyre doing a good job and might need the wake-up call that spells out how theyre failing us.
