(3,550 posts)very many protestants didn't even consider Catholics to be Christians. It started to change under Reagan and by 2000 the protestants started getting much more comfortable with the Catholic church as the US bishops became more and more reich-wing under the influence of opus "dei" money. It isn't difficult to see a future where the US church, and maybe the churches in a few African countries are in schism with Rome, but closely allied with the protestants who burned crosses on the lawns of their great grandparents and chased them out of town in the middle of the night (from my Grandmother's personal experience). I would bet though that as soon as the reich-wing Catholics and protestants have achieved power and begun to cleanse the country of those of us whom they deem unworthy, they will fight amongst themselves much worse than during the founding days of the US when different colonies had different religions.
