What this really means is an excuse to reduce supports for socioeconomic factors that impact health and result in disparities. It also gives a rationale to take away subsidies for health insurance access, and places the blame for chronic health conditions back onto individuals.

Finally, it reinforces a hobby horse of the fundamentalist theocrats, who have been offended for years at having to contribute to the bodily health of groups who differ from them as far as spiritual lifestyles. The were attempts, in the wrangling over Obamacare, to set up "Christian" ( or whatever) "insurance" groups. No smokers, drug addicts, gays, ___ need apply. Those were found to be scams that people paid into but didn't get support back from, and have been challenged in court when new versions have appeared.
