(12,652 posts)benefits that most people think of when they think of Social Security (I got my February retirement benefit payment too). But SSDI is as integral to Social Security as retirement benefits are. Part of our payroll taxes, and part of our income taxes on Social Security benefits pays for SSDI. It doesn't all go into retirement benefits.

SSI (Supplemental Security Income) although administered by Social Security, yes, that is a completely separate program.
